Re: Anyone start their career late in Life?

I graduated at 56, presently caring for terminally ill husband Had a one day a week job at local hospital but it didn't work out. (Nor did it for ten other staff members and a receptionist....bad management, no bed labels, half the patient's armbands missing and boss telling me I needed a refresher course after just finishing my prac. Told her that was an insult. God knows what they did to the others to make them resign as well. I really didn't have the experience should an emergency occur so resigned and felt the weight lift off my shoulders. I have never regretted the time I spent trying to get this degree but I would like a post grad. Never give up and the harder they try to make it in the education system, that's when you really dig the heels in... I had an Arts degree but couldn't get a job with that. Hopefully one day I can pursue nursing in a system that supports their nurses, where adequate help is available and where I can indulge in the career I have chosen. What really irks me though was after I resigned she told me I had great potential.
_maybe somewhere else eh?

Re: Anyone start their career late in Life?

I'm 46 and will be graduating with an ADN in May. I already have a BS and an MBA, but I feel that these degrees never really took me too far in a career. Now I know that in nursing, I don't have to worry about getting layed off because of my age or if I don't look like a fashion model. I will be making a difference and not just making some big corporation rich. I can also save for a decent retirement.

Re: Anyone start their career late in Life?

I'm thinking of becoming a nurse; I have taught for seven years now and there are not that many opportunities to advance. I am seeking more flexibility, opportunities to advance, and a better pay check.

Can anyone recommend a book or two that might be helpful to me in making this decision?

Thanks!
Diana

Smile Re: Anyone start their career late in Life?

I am a junior in a BSN nursing program. This degree, if I manage to complete it successfully will be my 4th college degree. I hold degrees in engineering, business management, and an M.B.A. in Finance. I was the C.E.O. of a well known computerer network service company for over 14 years, and retired early to the beach. Booring after the novelty of playing all day wore thin. I will be 43 years old in the spring. So far, it has been very interesting returning to school at an undergraduate level. I feel that I am learning a great deal, and it will help me become a better person by helping others. After all, how much $$$$ does anyone really need to make before you decide to help other people and give something back? I think you are on the right track. If you love others, nursing is a great career. You will find good folks with alot of heart will be happy to help you adjust and learn. Best of luck to you.

Re: Anyone start their career late in Life?

I am about to enter an RN program at the age of 60! I have worked as an accountant for many years and raised three children - becoming a nurse is a life-long goal - something I have always wanted to do.
