What are the requirements to start a degree in Forensic Nursing?

Hi everyone. I've been working as a RN on a neurology unit for a year now and I have a BSN. I would like to pursue a career in both Forensic Nursing and Neonatology. I've been able to find information on neonatology but not forensic nursing. I would like to know how many years must I have first worked as a RN to pursue the degree, what are the requirements, if online degree courses are best since it seems as if there aren't any schools offering this degree in my state of Florida, and what are the salary ranges. Information will be every much appreciated. Thanks :-)

Hello, MissTinkyRN and Welcome to allnurses.com and the Forensic Nursing forum

It is so good to have you with us.

Please read through these threads:

How Do I Become a Forensic Nurse/Role of the Forensic Nurse

The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner - SANE

I suggest at least 3 years nursing experience in areas where you can witness forensics being applied (like the ED, critical care units, etc.).

As for which entity to be educated as Forensic Nurse? Entirely up to you. After you gain some RN experience, you can do a certificate program in forensics. Or, you may consider a post-Masters certificate in Forensic Nursing.

Salary will depend upon the area you work (state, county, city, etc.). I've seen as low as, $25/hr up to $175/hr., depending on the area of the country.

If you have other questions, please post here. And, we hope you enjoy allnurses.com.
