3. ARTICLE: NURSES GRAPPLE WITH GOOD FORTUNE
Eileen Breslin, dean of the School of Nursing at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, can remember when a woman's job options went like this: Teacher. Nurse. Secretary. Nun.
And those who chose nursing, she says, were often regarded as "non-thinking" nurturers.
Much has changed, Breslin says. Though women's choices have greatly expanded, nursing is far more commonly perceived as a field requiring intellectual skills, as well as compassion. Moreover, it's proving to be a promising career path in a dismal job market.
