Will I ever make it? ....as a nurse?

I am a junior in high school and I want to be a nurse. But I get pretty horrible grades. Math and science are extremly hard for me in school. Right now I am in Algebra and Chemistry and I have a D in both classes. I have a very hard time understaning both of these subjects, but that is what you need for nursing school. Will I even make it? Or will I even be accepted into any kind of nursing school considering my grades? I don't even know if I can get accepted anywhere?! Please help!

Thanks,
Tessa

Re: Will I ever make it? ....as a nurse?

I did not get the best grades in high school either. I had other things to do besides study! (looking back, I wish I would have spent more time studying, but it is hard to realize that as teenager!)

I didn't go straight to college after high school- I had two babies which became my inspiration to go into nursing. As much as I thought I would hate college and just barely sneak by- it was totally different this time around because I loved what I was learning! Your motivation has changed because you have chosen what you want to learn-nursing.

I would just try to buckle down the best you can now, and know that there will be hope for you when you graduate high school. If becoming a nurse is your dream, you will definitely find a way to make it happen!

Best of luck to you!

I didn't get great grades in high school, either. Is tutoring a possibility? Get some help! Don't give up, and good luck!!

Re: Will I ever make it? ....as a nurse?

I did not do well in high school...lol I was such a social butterfly, that my grades only came into true effect during my volleyball seasons!! My senior year I straightened up my family moved fro California to Texas, but my grades were B, C, ish. There was a nurse at my church would took me to the hospital with her for a couple of days; she worked in Labor & Delivery, and I loved it!! That's when I knew I wanted to be a nurse, but needless to say, in my second semester of my freshman year of college, I flunked out, failed and dropped 16 hours. Yeah... I went back home, tried again, dropped all my courses... I had totally lost my motivation...and I was still focused on outside things that were getting me nowhere. I kept doing so bad at school I got put on academic suspension... I thought I wasn't cut out for nursing, that it wasn't for me. But that was what I needed! Sitting out and reflecting realize and sort out what I was going to do. I took a retail job at Forever 21, I thought I was going to change my major to fashion merchandising. I was a visual merchandiser, and let me tell you, I had no flexibility, it was just cut and dry. I was supposed to work from 7 in the morning to 3 in the afternoon, well many of times I would have to stay til 7 in the evening to finish a deadline. Not what I signed up for, for 5 days a week! And on top of that I had a 3 month old son at home! The store would never stay in shape the sales associates just did not care where they placed anything, I felt I wasn't accomplishing anything. So I quit, I decided I HAD TO GET BACK INTO SCHOOL AND PURSUE MY DREAM OF BEING A NURSE. I'm in school this semster and I am KICKIN BUTT!! I have gotten all A's on all my test in A&P, in another one of my classes I have passed all my competency check offs for vital signs, simple wound dressing, and catherization on the first attempt! I've also gotten all A's on all of my medical terminology quizzes for this class. I feel so proud of myself, its built up my confidence, and I know I will conquer my dream of becoming a nurse! I get tutoring, I have a study group, I do whatever I can to insure that I know the information. NEVER GIVE UP ON YOURSELF, IF YOU GET DOWN, GET YOURSELF UP AND KEEP ON TRUCKING! As long as you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything. Good luck.

Hi Tessa,
Welcome to the board, I think it's great you are looking to your future at such a young age and are looking to work toward what you need for it! Kudos to you for that!!!

Math and science are required courses, I would work now with your instructors to find out what you are missing and try and take care of it now to make it easier in college. When you do go on to school you will be taught again the basics, but you will learn much quicker with a back ground. I had no science or math back ground and started school again 20 years after highschool. It's a lot of work but when you really want something you can do it!

Also you might try getting in with a hospital now, you can volunteer or see about getting liscenced as an aide, that will give you and edge up. The more you know about a subject the easier it will become. Good luck to you!!

Catherine

Re: Will I ever make it? ....as a nurse?

I did great in high school, I graduated with a B average only because I didn't take my GPA seriously until the 2nd semester of my 11th grade year. Now college was a totally different story. Where do I begin...1st semester gpa 1.37, second semester gpa 1.8 third semester gpa...1.6 third semester gpa...1.7...it took me getting a letter in the mail stating that if I didn't bring my gpa up I'd get suspended for a semester. I had to go to summer school and I had to get all A's in order to stay in school. When I got a 4.0 over the summer it felt so rewarding, I told myself now if I can do it because I have to, why can't I do it because I want to.

Basically I had to reevaluate my life and figure out what was holding me back from actually getting something out of school other than bad grades. I realized it was me focusing so much on making friendships, going out, and sleeping in. Also, it was my inability to ask questions when I didn't understand something or to even ask for help.

I wouldn't give up if I were you, there has to be some type of tutoring available at your school. Talk to your teachers, tell them your career goals, and how important making good grades are to you. Let them know that you're concerned and that you actually care. Try to form a study group with some classmates.

Once you graduate and go off to college after you've been in college those first two years assuming you go to a 4-year school, and you apply to the nursing program your hs gpa won't even matter at least I don't think it does. Not only that, they have remedial courses in school for people who pretty much need to refresh their memory. I'd advise you to take those before taking the actual courses needed for your degree. I hope my rambling helps. Good luck
