Hi-
I am in the process of finishing my pre-reqs to apply to the nursing programs at TCC and Weatherford Colleges. I have gotten a B in one of my sciences, and all A's in the others. I know the science courses weigh pretty heavily...Can I ask anyone who has been accepted to either of these schools what your GPA was at the time of acceptance? Also, are you able to juggle work and school at the same time?

I have heard stories of people who have 4.0 GPA's and do not get accepted. I know that there are several other factors that could have been the cause of this. I am not letting that discourage me, but I am curious to know. If necessary, I can repeat the course and strive for an A. Thanks for any feedback that is provided. I am just about to finish my second semester of nursing school at TCC. When I applied, I had a 4.0 in my science classes, a 3.8 overall GPA, and a good score (can't remember exactly what it was) on my TEAS test. However, I know A LOT of people who are in the program who made a B in one of their science classes and had overall GPAs of about 3.6. They look at your TEAS test as well, particularly the science section of the test, and they look at whether you have finished all of your prereqs or not. Don't retake your class if you have a B. I think you have a good shot of getting in if you have a B in only one of your science classes and a pretty good GPA (3.6 or higher). A friend of mine had a B in Chemistry and a 3.6, and she was accepted to both TCC and Weatherford. I don't know for sure what Weatherford's cut-off was at that time. A lot depends on the number of people that apply and the number of people who get accepted into other schools. Don't pay any attention to those people who say they were turned away from TCC with a 4.0. If they were, it was probably because they did not have all of their prerequisites finished, did not have all of their documentation in on time, or they did poorly on the TEAS. It is important to have ALL of your prereqs finished. All of the people I have met in the nursing program finished ALL of their prereqs before getting accepted except for one guy who still needed to take PE.

I also know plenty of people who work in nursing school. A few work full- time, but the majority of them work part-time, and they have jobs that are pretty flexible. Some people do fine working, but I know others who have had to cut back on their hours in order to do well in school. I guess it just depends on how well a person can manage their time and how well they function with a lot of stress and little rest.

Thanks alot for your help! Congratulations on your acceptance and also on how close you are to finishing! Lemme burden you with one more question....I know that you are required to finish PE and an fine arts/humanities elective as part of the pre-reqs. I have a Management degree from TCC and I have taken both of these classes. I got B's in them both..(I know, I know..how did I get a B in PE...I was just ready to go and wasn't really focused on this classes, silly me)...However, I have heard that they don't count these classes in your gpa calc for acceptance to the program...so I am wondering should I retake those or not? I really appreciate your feedback. Its meaningful to get info from someone who has been there firsthand. Thanks again...and again... CONGRATS!

I think they do count these classes. They look at your overall GPA for ALL of your prereqs, including the PE and fine arts elective. They also look at your science GPA seperately. I think they admit based on:
1)The number of prereqs finished
2)Science GPA
3)Overall GPA
4)TEAS test scores, especially on the science section of the test
5) Whether you have all of your documentation turned in
They look at all of these, not necessarily in this order.

I don't know if I would retake them or not. Have you calculated your GPA on all of your prereqs? It would depend on what that is. If I had below a 3.6 overall GPA then I probably would, but if you have a 3.6 or higher, I don't know that I would. Calculate your GPA for the prereqs that they will calculate in the nursing department.
Most people will have a few B's, so I wouldn't worry about it too much unless your GPA gets too low for you to be competiive (less than 3.6). This is just my two cents, so it is not worth much, but I hope it helps. Good luck!
