Ahh, I think I have backed myself up into a corner!

Because of layoffs and unexpected medical expenses, my husband and I filed Chapter 7 Bankruptcy last Sept. While that helped get the creditors off our backs, it did not do anything to help losen our tight budget. We still penny pinch every single day!

So here's my question...are there any student loans for people with 'bad credit'? I do not receive any financial aid, as my husband's income excludes us, even though we have 3 children, and are barely making ends meet.

I have been taking out student loans, but they barely cover tuition and books. Is there any help for students like me?

I'm also digging through scholarship sites looking for any help, but an almost 30 year old (my 30th b-day is Aug. 19!!!) first time college student is not a popular scholarship pick.

Any and all help would be appreciated!!!

the guaranteed student loans (stafford) don't look into past credit UNLESS you have previously defaulted on a student loan. Are you currently in school? Have you applied? Been accepted? I was able to use my acceptance as an entry way into working at a hospital. I'm going to work for a while as a health unit coordinator (unit secretary). Then hopefully I will be able to get some scholarships and reimbursement through work.

Yes, this is your best bet. I have horrible credit due to identity theft and Sally Mae has been good to me. Good luck to you.

I too am in the same boat...my husband and I both lost good paying jobs, and our credit went down....i was really worried that i would not be able to recieve students loans with our bad credit, but i was wrong. I have a stafford loan which does not look at your past credit unless you have previous defaulted loans as someone above posted.

Can you get help with sally mae (or other) if you aren't working but your spouse is??

Try applying for private scholarships through your school as well. I am 33 yrs old and my cc gave me over $2,300 just in scholarships alone for this upcoming school year. I also received a Pell which doesn't look at your credit history (I think) and we have a bankruptcy from 2001. Sometimes the private scholarships from your school are easier to get because they often only apply to students that live in your area or attend your school, and aren't open to every student in the USA trying to get them. Have you checked with Nursing Scholarships offered by the state you live in? Many states have scho. that will pay up to 15,000 per semester if you have been accepted into a nursing program. The wonderful thing is that you have two options in repayment. You can either agree to work as a RN in that state for a specified amount of time and as long as you work as a nurse anywhere in that state for that amount of time they will forgive the loan completely or you can pay it back at a very low percentage rate over ten years. NC has many and I know TN did too. Go serach for nursing scho. for the state you live in and see what you can find or ask the finacial aid office to give you links.

I Have Ok Credit, Know It Because My Primary Job Is A Loan Officer Right Now While I'm In Pre Reqs, And I Have Been Turned Down From Over 15 Companies For Student Loans. I Work Two Jobs So No Grants, Stafford Loans Are The Only Thing I'm Able To Get. But The Amount Increases Every Year You're In School, So Just Start Part Time And You Can Work Up To More. This Is What I'm Having To Do.
