Check your professor on some site like ratemyprofessor.com or ask other students who've already taken the class (if possible) who is the best instructor.
Use the first week or two of class to evaluate the professor. If I feel that my best work will be sabotaged by a bad or unfair professor, I'll drop the course.
This isn't to say that I'm looking for the easy A or the least amount of work; far from it. The best professors I've had are the ones that gave me tons of work and pushed me beyond my breaking point. But I do need to trust that their grading is fair and that I will get an A if I do A work. I also need a professor that will teach me the way that I learn best. When I'm in doubt, I drop the class and retake it next semester with another professor.

I just want a A but that is a difficult class, I have heard...any input?
