Question - Prerequisite Questions- Order, Type of Class, Summer Courses

I am planning on taking my prereqs starting, one in session I and another in session II, each of which runs for a month at BMCC and City Tech. I also expect to work full time. I have narrowed down a few which many school require for the BSN (second degree as well as traditional for I plan on applying to both types just in case). These are Developmental or Lifespan Psych, Anatomy & Physiology I & II, Microbiology and Statistics.

Is there an order I should take these? Do any of the sciences build upon any? I think I may have to take pre reqs to the Anatomy & Physiology since I avoided college level Chem and Bio in my fist degree. Since the summer session is definitely shorter/condensed, and I will be working full time, perhaps I should take Psychology and Statistics and take the sciences and lab in the fall? Pls advise.

Anyone has had to do nursing prereqs while working fulltime , pls. advise as to what is realistic and doable.

Finally, can anyone who has taken prerequisites at BMCC or City Tech tell me what would fulfill the Developmental Psych prereq requirement that many local nursing programs would take? Do they have to encompass birth and on or can they be from adolesecence and on?

Thanks as always!

I would take Developmental Psychology for sure (I thought it was fairly easy and would make a good condensed course). Anatomy and Physiology is a lot to cram into the summer when you are working full time, but if you are ambitious I would say get one out of the way. I have no idea about Stats, I'm taking it this summer (but it's not condensed).

I say take Dev. Psychology and Stats, and leave the big sciences for the fall where you will have more time to absorb the information. Since your working full time and the semester is condensed, I think that would be the be option.

I would take that pre-req for AP first. That's how I started it last summer. Since I had to take four BIO classes (pre-req for AP, API, APII, micro) I wanted to start with BIO classes. Also, I had to take pre-req for algebra, MAT 092. I started last summer with BIO156 and MAT092. I took BIO156 online. I worked full time as well and took these two classes together in short summer session. It was doable; I got high B in BIO, and an A in math. However, I did not really like science online. It was a lot of essays and I had to do all my labs at home (beets, beef liver, potato).

I'm in the similar situation as you are. Working full time days. Strongly recommend taking your transcript and discuss your study path with the colleges you're interested in applying. They will do eval and lay out the courses for you. I did this with 3 colleges and draw conclusion on what would best suited for all three.

Currently taking Med Terminology at the hospital (not required but I thought it would be helpful and it's free for me). Registered for Dev Psych (pre-req is General Psych which I already have) and an on-line Nutrition course. Both are for 8 weeks. I'm planning on getting the text books early to start the readings. Fall '08, I'll take A&P 1; Spring '09, A&P 2; and Sum '09, Microbiology. These courses are important (thus, taking only one class at a time) in getting acceptance so I want to ace them. I already have college Chem which is a pre-req. Hope to apply to BSN in Jan '09 to start NS in Fall '09.

Good luck to you!

Re: Prerequisite Questions- Order, Type of Class, Summer Courses

Currently working full time and doing my pre-reqs and co-reqs 3 at a time. Had to take refresher Bio so I took it with ENG101 and Psy101, now I am taking A&P 1 Intro to Algebra, a CNA course and will be starting accelerated Eng 102 , because the CNA is now only clinicals. So starting next week I will be doing all of those classes and taking finals. I'm crazy.. but I am am doing very well... minus a slight issue with an A&P lab quiz I BOMBED BIG TIME. Guess it all depends on your motivation and stress level at your current job.

Did you or do you go to Rio? I do. My favorite Bio lab was the beef liver. LOL The A&P is pretty difficult.. well at least I think so in this format. But the Psy and Eng 101's were easy. I am finding the Mat092 interesting.

Re: Prerequisite Questions- Order, Type of Class, Summer Courses

If Biology is not a requirement I would say to skip it. It was not a requirement for me in any school that I looked into. I also did just fine in my A&P 1-2 and Microbiology classes. If you think you need a refresher then take Biology... that is really your call. Everyone is different.

I would take human growth & dev. in the summer for sure. That was pretty fun, easy, and basic.
