Prereq question - Biology not on list for accelerated program??

Brief background: I graduated in 1991 with a BA in music education. I haven't taken biology (or chemistry) since high school way back in the mid-80s. I applied to the accelerated program online and sent my college transcripts a couple weeks ago, the program coordinator reviewed them and sent me the list of prereq's I have to take:

A&P 1, 2 and 3
micro
pathophysiology
nutrition
pharmacology

and suggested I take something called "Chemistry and Life" which, in the course catalog, is described as chemistry for pre-veterinarian majors. I'm thinking that would be a good thing for me, not having had a chem class in so long.

But I'm also wondering about biology?? Haven't had that in eons also and isn't that as important? A&P and micro are all bio classes, right? Should I take some sort of biology review class before tackling the others? I don't *have* to take it to get into my program but I'm wondering if it would be a good idea?

Thoughts?

My first prereq when returning to school was A&P I. I had not had biology for 15 years. I have now taken A&P I, II, and microbiology. I would recommend taking micro first. I managed A's in all, but A&P would have been easier if I had taken micro first.

My A&P 1 had Biology 101 as a prerequisite. You might want to check to see if yours is the same way.

Yes, I definitely think basic bio refresher could help. However, I hadn't had bio in 17 years when I took A&P 1, and of course I didn't remember a thing from so long ago. So I struggled a little at the start, but made up ground later and ended up with an A.

Also, my Micro class had A&P 1 as a prerequisite.

You won't need to re-take the biology. Everything you will need for nursing is in the pre-requisites you were told you needed. Biology is more of a general survey of animal and plant life. A&P is very specific to the biology of the human body.

At my school A&P 1 has no prerequisites. However for micro it says they requires General Biology 1 and 2. Hmmm...

There is another CC here I can take some of my prereqs at and they require A&P1 before you can take micro. And A&P requires high school biology within the last 7 years.

Guess I'll be calling the program coordinator tomorrow to try to clear this up.

Thanks all!

At my school A+P I had Molecular+Cell Bio as a pre-req...also the recommended line up from the school went like this:

Sem1- Molecular+ Cell Bio
Sem2- Anatomy+ Physiology I
Sem3- Anatomy + Physiology 2
Sem 4- Microbiology

They also had some blurb about " highly recommending" students not take A+P/Micro at the same time....I didn't have mine planned out that way anyway but I know plenty of ppl who did.

I just finished a&p I with an A ! and it was my first class in 12 years--i was happy. BUT my first degree is in a biological science so I've had bio, chem, organic chem etc. I would suggest that you take the chemistry class especially before A&P, it also helps in nutrition which i took online. general bio will not really help you since it is a general review. Good Luck!

High school biology was all my ADN and my ADN to BSN program required. So you might not have to take it. But definately call and clear it up, since you say it's a prereq for Micro.

Good luck to you.

I did my classes like that, Micro and A & P I together, plus two more classes. I would not recommend anyone do it that way, unless they absolutely have too. It was a very heavy load, and I was not able to give either class 100 percent. I did get decent grades in all classes, but the Micro grade wasn't as high as I had hoped. It helps to have a good instructor with those classes also. They do require alot of time. Good luck!

We had to take General Bio first, it was a great class. It covers a little bit of everything in it and it was actually harder than the other Bio classes afterwards. There was even chemistry in it. In our school you must take it if you have not had it completed in the last 5 years.
