There is another CC here I can take some of my prereqs at and they require A&P1 before you can take micro. And A&P requires high school biology within the last 7 years.
Guess I'll be calling the program coordinator tomorrow to try to clear this up.
Thanks all!
I had the same problem when I took A&P 1. I took Gen Bio in 1992. At the time I was considering PA school so I needed Chemistry 1&2 (I had taken Chem 1 in 1992 but only got a C so I figured I needed to retake that one). I called the department head of the CC I was taking the classes at and pled my case. (They were also requiring college algebra for chemistry - I don't know why - and I hadn't taken that either. Somehow I have a BS with only Statistics, which is a lovely thing.) I told him I felt very confident of my abilities and that if I screwed up, I'd go back to his office, eat crow, and take any prereq he wanted me to. I took my transcript from my BS, which I finally finished while in the military in 1999, and showed him I'd graduated with honors through several Excelsior exams. He told me he was impressed with my self-presentation and signed the necessary forms.
I got high B's in both sections of Chemistry and an A in A&P 1. I'm taking A&P II in the fall. I got a biology textbook at a thrift store that was only a couple of years old for $2 and had it in reserve as well as a "Human Biology" course book I got off of either amazon.com's used books or eBay - I can't remember which - for nine bucks (the cover was destroyed but the book was fine). For A&P II I'm going to get the "Ridiculously Simple" book - but I survived Organic Chem (also a PA req) so I'm hoping I'll be OK!
I would do the same thing again, too. Just call the Dept. head and state your case in a clear but respectful manner. The worst they can say is "no" and then what have you lost aside from 15 minutes of time? My dad always said you never know unless you ask, and in most cases asking is the one thing that won't cost you a dime.
Good luck!
