I'm in an RN-AD program but personally, I wouldn't spend money on books until you know what is being assigned. There's no point in buying a med-surg book when you don't know what the instructors at your school prefer. Don't waste your money.
To be honest, I just jumped in and
started. So did most everyone else along with me (those who weren't already in nursing or medicine somehow). Your instructors will "mold" you the way they want, and focus your attention on what they want you to learn first (and best).
I think the ONE book you should have before starting is some type of portable calendar--date book type thing. I actually bought Saunders' Student Nurse Planner Version 3 and REALLY liked it. It has ALOT of basic information you just can't go wrong with: lab values, head to toe assessments, patient care, abbreviations you'll need to know, med info, tips for studying and exam taking...a little bit of everything. Nice reference.
Wait...I see you don't plan to start until NEXT August? Don't buy a thing yet

Info changes so fast, you won't even want the Saunders book I recommended until the month before you start!!
Good luck!
