Help! - Organic chemistry help

I am in the middle of my semester and struggling a lot. I am a really slow reader and takes whole lot of time to incorporate through my memory. I joined this forum today and em' looking forward for getting help. Please help me people out there. I am so sad and stress out right now. I even dropped my philosophy class to concentrate more on ochem. I hope to get support and help from people. Thanks.

Re: Organic chemistry help

Hello,

Organic chem is a tough, tough course and many people struggle with it, you're not alone. I think you were wise to drop a course to focus on O Chem...I found the best thing for me was to spend as much time as I could studying, reviewing etc. Also, I found it helped to focus on and understand the basics, most organic molecules fall into a group based on structure. So understanding the common structure is very helpful...for example: carbohydrates/sugars are based on six carbons and are in a ring. Understanding how that structure looks will help you understand how they react and why. Think about how the structure of the ring differs from the structure of a straight chain...

One of the things I used to do when studying is to look at a molecule on the page, then I would close my eyes and visualize it in my head. Visualization is KEY in O Chem...

Good luck...and happy studying!

Re: Organic chemistry help

Sapana, O chem IS hard! My prof assures me that lots of people struggle and that is it difficult for most students. It requires a good deal of study and practice that is well beyond what is typically needed. I am taking it as well and we are working on carbs right now as well. I have to work on it every single day.

What specifically are you having trouble with? Have you tried to get a tutor or joined a study group? Sometimes that can be more helpful than anything. Try to make sure you read the material before class, then again after class. You might also want to invest in a recorder to record lectures. That helps me a lot.

Here are some websites I have found useful:

For Haworth projections http://www.nku.edu/~russellk/tutoria...r/haworth.html

Virtual Chembook http://www.elmhurst.edu/~chm/vchembook/index.html

http://www.nku.edu/~russellk/tutorial/tutorial.html

Hang in there. You are 1/2 way there, you can do it. Let me know if I can help.
