Hello. I want to change my profession and I need some advice. I am currently a public school science teacher, my b.s. degree is in zoology and I have a masters in science education. What do I have to do to get into nursing? what courses do I have to take to become an r.n.? Who do I contact to find out about this? I live in Orlando, florida.

In any forum, go to the top yellow bar and towards the right, you will see something that reads--> Forum Tools. It is a pull down menu. Click it. In that menu, you will see--> Post a New Thread. Click that.

And there you go.....just follows what it tells you.

I am giving you two links. This first http://www.studentnurses.com/nursingschools/florida.shtml is a link to a listing of all nursing schools in Florida and the type of degrees they offer. (I can never find the listing of nursing schools on the Florida Board of Nursing site, otherwise I would have linked you into that.) You want to make a list of the schools that are close to where you live, unless relocating is not a problem for you. Once you have a list of prospective nursing schools you will have to contact them individually to find out what the requirements are for admission into their nursing programs. Much of this information can be found by going to each school's website and going to the pages for the Department of Nursing.

In general, most nursing schools specific requirements are, minimally, a college level course in Anatomy and Physiology, either College Chemistry or Chemistry for the Health Sciences and Introduction to Microbiology. Different schools may have other specific requirements like Growth and Development (which I would assume you already have taken).

Since you already have a bachelor's degree I would put as many of those credit hours you have already earned to good use and go for a BSN. However, you may find it faster to go the ADN route if you are in a hurry to get trained and started in the profession. One of the things you might run into is that the schools may require you to retake some of the required science courses that you may already have taken for your current B.S. if they were taken more than 10 years ago. I ran into that problem when I went back for my BSN. In most cases you have to not only apply to matriculate at a school, but also file an application with their Department of Nursing as well. Many RN schools have waiting lists because there are so many students wanting to get into RN school and the schools can only take on a specific number of students at a time. You will also find the rules of each waiting list to be different as well. This is why you need to contact each school and find that information out yourself.

Anatomy and Physiology 1 and 2, Microbiology, Intro to Chemistry, if you go for BSN you also need Intro to Organic/Biochem. Those are the science requirements of the prerequs. Since you are a science teacher it should be a piece of cake for you and you have a lot of the prerequs under your belt like English, math, sociology, psychology etc .....other classes like nutrition, growth and develompent, ethics, statistics might also be needed. Contact your local community college/university for info on nursing programs and let them give you a degree plan, they'll look at your transcripts and determine what you have left to do. Good luck!

Welcome and what a great choice!!

Where you already have an advanced degree there are programs that you can jump into in many colleges even though your major was not nursing. I live in NH and UNH here has a great one. Somewhere on here I have seen a post regarding this type of program. I am starting from scratch so I did not pay so close attention.
