Just a question for my fellow pre-nursing students... IF you get into nursing school, what do you see yourself doing in the future? Will you stay an LPN or RN and if so what will you specialize in? Anyone planning to do an RN-BSN or LPN-RN program? Anyone going to grad school? If so, what for? Sorry, I know it's a lot of questions. Just curious as to what everyone else's plans are. Honestly, I don't think I will know what area I want to work in until I get out of NS. I am getting an ASN to be an RN and I know that I will most definitely get my RN-BSN. Some days I think that I will want to go to grad school and be a pediatric nurse practitioner because I kids. But other days I don't know if my heart can take working with seriously ill or dying kids. Other days I think I will want to be a CRNA. However, lately I've been thinking that I might want to be an RN... forever. Like I said, I will definitely get my BSN. But I was just wondering if that is anyone else's plan. Everyone that I know that wants to be a nurse wants to eventually go to grad school so they can still have the same type of job but make more money. I'm not really concerned with that. I mean, I know nurses don't make the most money in the world, but they make a difference, and that's what matters to me. I can definitely see myself doing bedside nursing forever. Am I the only one? I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to go to grad school and advance your career in that way, but I don't know if I want to. Especially lately I've been thinking I just want to stay an RN. But what about the rest of you? Any ideas of what you want to do? Anyone else just want to be a nurse like me?

ADN to BSN to MSN(CRNA)

My little family unit is getting ready for a huge life change. My husband is going to be retired from the military soon and we are changing states, our oldest child will start school this year and my husband will either be starting school himself or he will be starting a new job. If everything works out the way I would like it to, I will earn my BSN from a good 4 year program, which I will apply to after I have as many needed credits out of the way as possible. The area we are moving to does have a good 2 year program for ADN, which is possibly what I will end up having to do depending on the path our lives take after our move. I just hope that I get to continue with my schooling and someday earn that BSN if I have to compromise.

My sister is currently a LPN and she's working out plans to start a program for either her ADN or BSN next year. Having her guidance while I make these plans has been invaluable.

I personally think having someone to talk to about their experience is a great thing. I'm pretty sure that's why I see all the pre-nursing students on this forum.

Thanks to her I won't have to make the same mistakes that she feels she made when she was a new student and the time and energy I will save from that alone is priceless!

I'm absolutely getting an MSN someday but for the moment I'm going to get my BSN and see what I'm interested before I jump into the grad school pool. I'm doing a research project on anesthesia, so being a CRNA seems really nifty, but I also wanna prescribe drugs and be "doctor-lite" by going the NP route. One step at a time, i say

WHen I started to go to school, I was going for my BSN. Well, my hubby wasnt happy about me starting a BSN program in 2009 or 2010 and finish in 2012. He wants KIDS sooner than that! Sooo I decided to get my ADN now, which in fact worked out better for us financially, and I should be done by May 2010. That said, BSN is my ultimate goal. Plus hospitals here pay for the RN-BSN bridge.

Short Term goal: graduate w/ BSN in two years.

I want a family so any schooling after my BSN will have to wait. If I get into the NICU, I plan to eventually become an NNP. Otherwise, maybe a CRNA. Not sure.

Right now, my BSN and a family are what I am most looking forward to.

LOL! CARLOS, let me first says a big CONGRATS to you getting in and getting your funding inline so that you can get started. I'm quite happy for you.

NOW, let me help you out a bit.....The term "invaluable" in the context that Eilene used it (My sister's help has been invaluable to me) is defined as
"a value that would be difficult to determine, because it is so huge" as opposed to "not valuable". What Eilene was saying was that her sister's help was VITAL to her, and impossible to put a value on becuase it was SO VALUABLE.

Did I read that right, Eilene? (I think I did, because I have a sister who is a nurse, and her help has been VERY valuable to me, too).

BTW, I plan on making my main goal as "the alleviation of pain and suffering". Whether that is as a ADN, or BSN, or floor nurse on a med-surg floor, or in a hospice role, I really don't know yet. I just want to help people *feel better* and get well.

I'm hoping to start my ADN program this fall and immediately afer I graduate I am going to do a RN-BSN program.

I then plan on getting my MSN in Anesthesia to be come a CRNA. I will have to quit my job once again to go back to school for a 28-month program but it is worth it, CRNA's make EXCELLENT money, talking about 100,000+ , I think CRNA's are the highest paid advanced nurses. So yeah those are my plans. I'm hoping to just go straight through and be done by the time I'm 26 or 27. I have a 14-month old son now and I'm not looking to have anymore children until I'm COMPLETELY done with school, so I won't have to worry about trying to go through a such tedious program with two or three children.
