How can I get ahead before the 1st day of class

Hi all,

I'n not sure if this is considered prenursing or nursing student question.
I have been accepted to nursing school and it starts in august.

I wanted to get a head start before classes start.
But theres no book list listed on my schools website.

I've been to the websites to study for NCLEX RN and have read some of the math problems, we will be learning.

I'm excited and really freaked out.
I know it takes alot of time, commitment, reading for nursing school.

Are there any material I can read to at least grasp some of the terms?
As I go through the boards, I come across alot of terminology, I have no clue about.

I just don';t want to be a lost duck on day one, while everyone has a crasp on things.

Re: How can I get ahead before the 1st day of class

Hi iamhere

I listed a really good resource for practicing nursing math here in this forum, the URL:

http://allnurses.com/forums/f50/nurs...ad-264395.html

I do have my list for books for the nursing program, but can't buy them yet, as they are not stocked in the bookstore yet. We have "nursing courtesy day" on Aug. 6th. Nursing Students have the day set aside to get their books early (cuz we need so bloody many). I have to wait til then. But I am doing some math problems almost every day, as I have to pass a math test by no less than 100% every semester in NS.

Good Luck & CHEERS!

If I were you I would go to a major bookstore like Borders and look at their nursing books section. If you find a good book on math for nursing you can get it and start self study on this one topic. That should be enough to keep you busy until school starts. Also, has the school provided you with any handouts yet? I doubt this is so, but if they have, you could read them over and make yourself familiar with the contents. Good luck to you.

THanks Happy_nurse63 and caliotter3,

I have looked through the math section in the forums and I will deff hit up borders and browse through their nursing section. Didn't even think of that before.

I wish my school released the book list, but it will be in mid aug
1 week or so before school starts.

Thanks guys and Much luck to you!!

First, get a good planner- there are some just for nursing students that have useful extras. Organization is a big factor in keeping up. Try to read (bookstore or online) about the "nursing process". A solid understanding of this is essential.

As far as 100% on dosage calculation/math--it should be required since a mistake can seriously harm a patient. We start passing meds the 8th week of school- pretty quick. We had better be able to do dosage. We were required to take a "math for health careers" class before we could apply to nursing so I have a good grasp of it. Get a review book like "dosage calc for dummies" or "dosage made easy". These are in the nursing section in major bookstores.
Good Luck!

Re: How can I get ahead before the 1st day of class

When I went to nursing school they sent us a list of books for summer reading- but only the psych prof participated so I spent time and money on books that were no dam use. I recommend anatomy/physiology texts, as simple as you can find, because you want a little boost but you don't want to psych yourself out before you ever get there. Read what interests you, and remember that the difficult concepts will be explained. If you know where everything is, and vaguely what it might do you will be a huge step ahead. I had never heard of lymph nodes before I went to nursing school, for example, or realized that blood went through the heart AND lungs. Buy a medical dictionary- Tabers is the most often used- so you can look things up too.
