Question - Has anyone ever sat in on a class before they registered for the class ?

I heard of peeps doing that. Especailly in county colleges. I mean I could sit in on a chem or A&P class and just observe. I think that would be a cool way to get ahead of the game. I am sure the idea that you have an ID and you are a current student would make it ok. Anyone heard of such a thing ?? Thanks !

Our CC has that, but you still have to pay for the class even though it doesn't count for a grade. Its called auditing a class, and you just sit in and observe it.

I have never done that, but I have sit outside the door and listened in.

I would think that if you asked the instructor for their permission, they would let you sit in for a class or two if there are enough seats. That way you don't have to pay for auditing the class unless you really want to audit it for the entire semester.

I think I am going to try it. I will just sit in the back of the class, not do the labs just listen to lectures. And get a feel for certain teachers too. Thanks for your reply !

What classes have to sat outside of and listened in ? Sciences ? I think it is a nice way to get a feel for the class and the teacher. not to mention getting a grasp on the subject. Thanks for your reply !

I did it for algebra because I am horrible at math, and was looking for a particular style of teaching. I also did it for the sciences because they so important. I didn't start doing this until my second semester after sitting through an algebra class with a professor who I couldn't understand (and I mean she barely spoke english).

I enrolled for an online organic/biochem course, but realized quickly that it was a bad idea......so I asked permission to sit in on the same class being taught by another teacher. She even let me take the tests and quizzes, and graded them! It made all the difference. (I would have enrolled in the regular class originally, but I misread the time schedule.)

That is so FUNNY! I have been thinking about doing the exact same thing...for the sciences to just 'see what it's really like' and gain insight on different professors..It would give you a huge leg up if you knew you couldn't understand someone's accent or didn't like their teaching attitude towards students. For instance, I am really turned off by teachers who make their students feel dumb for asking questions and use condesending tones when students ask a question they feel that the student should know. (Maybe because I'm an mom now- I'm not going to have anyone talk down to me!!) I would be so bummed if I registered for a prof and then got someone I couldn't understand or who rubbed me the wrong way every day. I'm going to check into the "audit" pricing.
thanks for asking this question! Let us know what you find out!
BTW, what are county colleges? Just curious, never heard of them.

Busymom,

If you look on the schedule you can often just stand outside the door, and hear everything. Many time professors will even leave the door open and you can see. It's effective and free.

I don't even think they notice really. I mean you eventually have to pay to do the class and get credits anyway. Plus, you are taking the time out to do the auditing. I think it is a proactive approach. I guess it depends on the prof. The sciences are a great start. Hey you can grab a syllabus if you hit the first class and you are golden. I am sure most syllabus's are pretty much the same. And get to know what book is used and get it online ! It has got to help !! I def would do it for the sciences.
