Doing my education in stages worked well for me; I have a family and I worked part-time through school, and attending my local CC was a great option.
Good luck with your advisor. Another thing that was helpful was talking to students who were a semester ahead; ones I knew from pre-reqs. They were more than willing to share syllabi (?) and other info specific to my program. Of course, I was more than happy to share with students behind me when I got there
