Question Question - DUI and Nursing

Hi all, I had 2 DUI's in my lifetime (2003 & 2006). I have checked with my school and it poses no problem there, as I was excepted to their BSN program starting in August. They said I needed to check with the Ohio Board of Nursing to see if this was going to pose a problem after I graduate. I have not been able to get a answer. I have checked with two of my local hospital's HR departments and both said they would have no problem with hiring me as long as no one was injured and as long as neither was a felony, which they were not. So I guess mainly I'm concerned with being able to sit for the exam. Does anyone know anything about a situation like this or has anyone been in such a predicament?

Re: DUI and Nursing

No one here can give you a definitive answer, since every state BON considers these kind of situations on a individualized, case-by-case basis. Your best bet is to continue working on getting an answer from your BON -- theirs is the only answer that matters.

Re: DUI and Nursing

twilli, if it were me, I would send the Ohio BON a certified letter with this question, and I would request an answer *in writing*. This is way too important to accept someone's answer orally or to take the word of a hospital HR person.

Shouldn't this thread be closed at this point?

You may not find out if you will be able to sit for the NCLEX until after you complete your program as the BON will make the decision then.

Please continue to communicate with your BON as they are the only ones who can answer your questions.
