Help! - confused in kansas??

hi. i have a question i am working on my prereqs for ns school and am curious, i have been a hairstylist for the last 11 yrs. always had an interested in being a l&d nurse but never had time for school between work and my 3 babies 5 and under.i finnally decieded to just put my nose to the ground and make it work and so far its great. so question is i REALLY want to go through w/ the rn program but i keep having a feeling maybe i should do an LPN program first and then bridge over to make sure that i can really do it i kind of have a few issues with dead people.. the whole issue knid of freaks me out. my hubby says don't let go of my dream and go all the way but i just don't want to waste time and $ if it turns out that i can't get over my issues. so any advice lpn or rn??? thanks, sorry to go on and on...

Re: confused in kansas??

I have the same issue too. I'm always affraid of dead body and cannot imagine being in the same room with them by myself. I always have this fear everytime going to a funeral and cannot get myself to look at the dead person sleeping in the casket. If I do look at them, I have this image of them laying in the casket in my head for weeks. I decided that no matter what I will need to overcome my fear and be strong. I hope that being a nurse will help me overcome that fear.

I would do some checking around, if you really want to be a L&D nurse, you're better off going the RN route in most areas, some states (or maybe most I'm not positive) don't allow LPN's to push med via IV, nor can they perform a charted assessment for certain areas of care or plan of care development, the hospitals in our area no longer allow LPN's to work L&D and very rarely will you see one on mother/baby or peds, most LPN's work med surg or in a surgical suite as a circulator or scrub nurse, get as informed as possible by your area hospitals as to what their requirements are

Re: confused in kansas??

I think it depends. For example there are things I have an issue with, but I want to be a nurse soooo bad, and its all I have ever wanted to be. I have put so much time, effort, and money into this that nothing will stop me. I can't imagine any issue that I couldn't find a way to work through that would prevent me from being a nurse.

I am sure if you think about it you feel the same way.
