I don't know how other moms did it.
It is hard, but it is different. Definitely there is some revisiting of the concepts of general chemistry, but not the math. There is a lot of memorization, and structures and reactions. There are so many steps to everything, and different ways to write it - different symbols meaning the same thing - like language. It often builds on itself though, that helps. It is interesting, that helps, too, I think.
Don't let the fear of it prevent you from reaching your goal, or taking that step. It won't eat you. Stand up to it! Review your general chem concepts (understand polarity, acid-base reactions, and bonding if nothing else!) then make sure you check ratemyprofessor.com and get the background on the potential instructor, ask around and see who is good, if possible. Get a tutor early and go often, join a study group, do the homework. If you are really concerned, stressed or strapped for time, don't take any other classes, at least not demanding ones. Avoid summer or short sessions. Tape the lectures. Ask for help. Mostly though, just commit to doing it. Challenge yourself and go for it!
Good luck!
