Did anyone apply to Brookhaven/Mountainview for Fall 08. The application deadline was 2/29/08, and I submitted mine on 2/25. On 2/26 they posted new information on the Web site that just floored me. It says that due to financial/teachers issues Mountainview will not be having an Fall 08 class. Instead they will be combining all applicants from Mountainview to the applicant pool at Brookhaven, and reducing the total number of slots available from 40 to 30.

I am not sure how many people apply each semester at Mountainview, but I am thinking this means they double the pool while reducing the available slots by 1/4th. Last semester the cut off was 27. something points.

I am wondering how others who are applying feel about this change, and how you think it will effect our overall chances.

Re: Brookhaven/Mountainview Dallas County Texas

i heard about this too and i have been upset! competition is fierce.
i have worked so hard to accumulate 31.3 points and if i don't get in due to their new changes, it will crush me. my friend is already in the program at mountain view and i heard similar to what you heard.
brookhaven is losing a teacher, and that is the reason why they are going from accepting 40 to 30.

how is everyone handling this?

I have been very upset. I was feeling pretty good about my 34. something points. I didn't get the new information until about a week after the application deadline. The app dead line was 2/29, and I submitted my app on 2/26, and the new information was not on the website at that time. How do you think it will effect the overall numbers?

That is all true, they told us last week that the next class won't start until Fall 09, which I don't understand because everyone will have graduated by then. I am not sure what is going on. I know they are having some problems with a shortage of teachers. My clinical instructor is an instructor they pulled from UTA.

Oh yeah and they told us that Brookhaven wasn't admitting a new class until then. They didn't say anything about Mountainview. This is just what one of the teachers said...

No ...its on Brookhavens web site that Mountainview will not be having a class until fall of 09, but Brookhaven will be having a class in fall of 08 with mountainviews students for 08 added to the applicant pool.
This is whats posted on Brookhavens nursing Website.

February 26, 2008

Dear Prospective Nursing Student,

Brookhaven College opened an extension campus of their Associate Degree Nursing Program on the campus of Mountain View College in the spring of 2008. There are currently forty (40) students enrolled and progressing through the program.

Because of budget constraints and the high cost of hiring qualified nursing faculty, Mountain View College has decided to defer the acceptance of the Fall 2008 nursing class until the Fall of 2009. Brookhaven College, for the same reason, has decided to accept only 30 students this fall of 2008.

In order to allow students equal access, Brookhaven College will be combining the applicant pools for both colleges for Fall 2008. The admissions deadline is February 29, 2008 at 4:00 pm. Brookhaven College will select the top thirty (30) students based on the established admission criteria.

If you are not admitted in this selection and you submitted a completed packet, you will receive three (3) additional points (one time only) to be calculated in your ranking if you choose to apply for the next class. This extra time will allow you to complete more nursing support courses and core curriculum courses. In addition, both colleges offer a variety of allied health programs in both credit and continuing education that you might consider. Please check www.mountainviewcollege.edu and www.brookhavencollege.edu for information about our allied health programs.

Mountain View College continues to work with Brookhaven College to ensure a comprehensive and high quality nursing program. There will be a question-and-answer session on March 3, 2008 from 5:00 until 6:00 p.m. the location will be Mountain View College and the room will be posted on the web site.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Dr. Sharon L. Blackman Mr. Felix Zamora
President, Brookhaven College President, Mountain View College

Ok I guess they were talking about Mountain View. She talked as if it were Brookhaven. I can't believe they are doing that...It seems like all of the teachers talk about retiring. I wonder which one it is? I bet in the next few years they will have an entirely new nursing faculty. You will love the new teachers though (2 new ones so far). They are wonderful!

this part is confusing me. i am aware of the rule that applicants applying for the 2nd time receive 3 extra points which is a 1 time benefit only. Is the above statement referring to that? Or is this an additional thing they are doing if i apply for the next class? I have already used the "one time only" 3 points for my application for Fall 08.

Thank you for posting the information you found on the website. I am very upset and worried. It is unfortunate that they don't have enough money to pay the teachers. People always hear about nursing shortages in hospitals, but the real problem is that there is a shortage of teachers, and what is happening at BHC/MVC is a perfect example. I am livid about this situation and it is stressing me out so much. I know the next 6 weeks are going to be miserable for all of us as we wait to hear of our acceptance or rejection and i can't imagine having my heart broken again after trying so hard to get in.

Re: Brookhaven/Mountainview Dallas County Texas

I'm praying for you guys who applied. I applied as well, but as more of a strategy to get the 3 points so by the time I complete my courses that will already be added. I was in disbelief at their timing with this & in my classes people have dwindled away in disgust. Most are on their way to UTA. Once I complete my courses this summer I will have 32 points. I'm thinking of re-taking the HESI for more points. Who knows...
