I am an international nursing student and I will like to know if applying to a nursing school other than the school i am taking my pre-reqs is considered a seperate application. If so, do i have to show a certain amount in the bank, get a new I-20 and so on?

I would think it would have to have a separate application. As for the rest.....I'm not sure. Ask your college's advisor.

Hi tutulu.
It depends on whether the two schools are affiliated, in which case you don't need to. For example my community college has two nursing schools affiliated to it, and the normal route is to first get accepted at the community college and then apply to the nursing school. The cc gives me the I-20 and that is valid for the nursing school school.
If the two are not affiliated then you will definitely need a new I-20 from the nursing school. I think this may involve completing your prereqs and then applying for a transfer to the Nursing school and showing all the necessary bank statements and all that.
What kind of school are you going to do your nursing program in? ADN, BSN?

I plan on getting an ADN. I'm at CCBC and I do not think they are affiliated to any other nursing programmes. I just want to have ample time to get account related issues in good standing well ahead of time and not be caught napping.
Are you an international student? If so, what was your experience and what should i be doing now to get prepared. Thanks once again.

I was just looking at your school website and it looks like CCBC does have a nursing program

I hope i have the right school. Looks like a good program and should give you your ADN. This program will prepare you to be an RN, and it looks like your college has some articulation agreements that would allow you to transfer into a BSN program after you get your RN. Unless there's a particular reason why you don't want to do nursing at your school i would recommend you stay there and get your ADN from there. This will save you the hassle of having to go through the trouble of preparing your application for another school (which for an international student can be a hellish procedure).
Bear in mind also that if you want an ADN program you have to pick a school that can issue an I-20. A lot of diploma programs can't do that unless they are affiliated with a community college, so make sure you check that out before you consider any moves. Also, if you are simply going to transfer to another community college make sure you can fulfill their credit requirements without having to take unnecessary courses. A lot of schools have a required minimum number of credits that a transfer student has to complete to get a degree from them, so make sureyou can do that without spending an unneccesary amount of money.
Also look at the requirement that international students have to always be in fulltime status, that means a minimum of 12 cr each semester. I know some schools consider the nursing program in itself to be fulltime and so don't impose the 12 cr rule but you need to look at that and plan your courses so that you don't waste your electives.

To answer your question, yes i am an international student and i am just getting into my second semester of prereqs. I have already been accepted into one nursing program for Spring '06 and have another interview with a second school soon. I haven't totally decided which one i will go to. They both have excellent programs but one is more costly and longer than the other. It might come down to which one offers a good scholarship.

Thanks. That was some real useful info. First, you got the website correct. My course planning was not very good and i just have A&P and micro to do. Anyway i am thinking of applying to other schools because i want to start clinicals immediately i am done with the prereqs. Other schools are just a back up plan just in case i am on a waiting list for ccbc. Also my sister with whom i stay with is moving to pennsylania.

Yeah, i know about bad planning. I am trying to avoid it at all costs. But the other thing i am considering is that i could use the extra credits to start on some of the extra prepreqs for the BSN program since i am hoping to go that route anyway after my ADN. So while doing a Nursing course that has maybe 7 cr i could use my extra 5 credits on some chem or statistics course that i'll need for my BSN program. What am doing now is planning to talk to some of the advisors in BSN programs i may want to transfer into and see what courses i can take in my cc that would be transferable.
Does your Nursing program usually have a long waiting list? You could ask them and see what the situation looks like. Also look at schools in the area of PA you might move to. I am close to Philadelphia and know of some schools there.
