I actually went to barnes and noble and bought a book by Kaplan- Nursing entrance exams- it was about 20.00 bucks and it helped me so much more then the study guide my school let me use. And it goes into such detail to make sure you understand it thoroughly. Hope it helps. and advice... relax, if you dont do well the first time. Its alot easier the second.. trust me.. GOOD luck!!!

Smile Re: Anyone taken HESI A2 admission assessment test yet?

I was informed that I need to take the Hesi A2 test inorder to compete for the RN program. Does anyone have any information on that test like where to get a study guide? I see a lot of people saying that they have a CD where can I get that as well? How is the test overall? Any information will be greatly appreciated.

How long is the test? I am very nervous about taking it. I just got the study guide in the mail and I started reading it immediately. Any tips besides the study guide you can give me?

Buy the study guide from amazon.com or from your school book store:

http://www.amazon.com/Admission-Asse...4991416&sr=1-1

That's the "official" guide and I wouldn't waste my money on the "Hesi A2 Secrets" guide which is more or less a generic guide for nursing entrance exams in general. But your mileage may differ...

Take the guide and look up and study anything you don't know in the Chem, Bio and A&P sections. (If you don't have to take them and only have to take the Math, reading, grammar, etc., then great!) All of the other study guides (Kaplan, NLN, etc.) have math in them that is *way* more than you'll need for the HESI, so don't waste your time studying anything more than what the "official" guide tells you you need to know. You can still use those other guides, but don't spend your energy on stuff you won't need.

There isn't a HESI A2 CD; you have probably been reading about the HESI exams for people who are already nursing students.

If you want to read other threads about the HESI, click on "Advanced Search" at the top of this forum. Highlight the "Pre-Nursing Student forum" so you don't get a bunch of threads that have nothing to do with the HESI A2 entrance exam. There is a lot of info in those threads.

Good luck!!

Re: Anyone taken HESI A2 admission assessment test yet?

i had both the official hesi study guide and the kaplan. after reading comments from other people saying the kaplan was far and beyond what you need to know...i focused more on the hesi study guide. the test was 3-5 hours long because it depends on how long you decide to take breaks inbetween each section. i dont know if its the same for all test sites but we were allowed breaks. i took time to breathe deeply and calm myself. i was required to take all 7 sections: anat & physio, bio, chem, math, reading comp, grammar, and vocab. some were 25 mins long, while others were 50 mins long. i found the vocab portion to be the hardest for me. i was stressen about this test for a whole month and scared of failing. it was a huge relief when i passed.

I bet you can breathe now! I have to take it on the 29th and I am extremely nervous. My nerves tend to get the best out of me when test taking! Anyway, I have been looking over the study guide; everything looks basic, but any suggestions for the a&p section would be helpful. Should I stick to the study guide?

Thanks!

Erica

If you are worried about the math section, don't be. I would suggest getting the HESI Study Guide and just learn what's in that. You don't need any other basic skills that what is covered right there. Go over some word problems online (there are so many), and if you're really rusty, take the NET test (ignoring the basic algebra). Not every question is multiple choice in the math section.

Here are some of the questions that I can remember from the A&P section of the Hesi test I took on Saturday. It might give you an idea of the level of depth they go to. This was the section I found most difficult. The Hesi Study Guide wasn't much help in this section, so I suggest you get an A&P study guide and review each system, not just the systems outlined in the Hesi Study Guide.

Every question was multiple choice:

Wink Re: Anyone taken HESI A2 admission assessment test yet?

I took the HESI a few weeks ago as part of my application for an accelerated program and everyone is right, definitely invest in the study guide. It's very general when it comes to the sciences, but the math portion was a life saver for me. Instead of taking out old textbooks, I was able to refresh all my basic math skills in less than an hour. Even though they are basic, I haven't divided fractions in a LONG time! And even though I had to take CALC II as an undergrad, you just forget things you haven't seen in a long time.

Also, take the time to really memorize your Roman Numerals and your conversions. There were at least 5-6 questions on the math portion for this section.

The rest of the math you'll see will be straight from the guide, so don't freak out. It's really easy if you take the time to go over it.

As far as the sciences go, the Biology was very basic, but I was a Bio major as an undergrad, so maybe my opinion is a little skewed here. Definitely make sure you know your cell organelles and their function. There were a lot of basic questions about that. Also, refresh on DNA and RNA and what processes to do what....transcription, translation, etc. Nothing in depth, just the basics. And don't bypass the plant section in the study guide. There was a question about light and dark reactions (where they occur), and where chloroplasts were stored.

The previous post is correct, the A&P was probably the most difficult section as there's so much material to cover. I would focus on the major muscle groups, hormones, basic anatomy of the heart, and the integumentary system. An example...

There was also a question on children being prone to ear infections and the length of the Eustacian tube being the cause.

The chemistry portion was also pretty basic and I don't remember much about this but I would recommend knowing the difference between types of bonds, the charges on molecules, and very minimal stoichiometry.

I didn't think the vocab section was necessarily hard, but sometimes they would ask you to identify the meaning of a word, but it wasn't just any word, it was a scientific word or process, so it felt more like it should have been in the Bio portion rather than the Vocab portion. But again, it wasn't anything you really haven't seen before.

The reading section was the same as most reading questions you've seen before (SAT, NET, Basic Skills). There's a passage and you're asked to identify the main idea, or what tone the author is using to write it, or what message the author is trying to get across. Obviously reading comprehension differs for every individual. My advice would be to take your time and really read the passage. RE-read it if you have to. I did my reading portion last because I wanted to get all my sciences out of the way and I assumed it would be my easiest section. At that point, I had already been sitting in my chair for 2 1/2 hours and I was impatient to get done and I made a few simple mistakes. Remember to be patient, and do that section first if you think it might be more difficult or take you longer.

I really stressed over this test and was pleasantly surprised when I finished. You'll get your score for that section as soon as you complete it, and at the end you'll get a cumulative score. Mine was a 92 and I was really pleased and didn't go crazy studying, but I did make sure to refresh all the topics covered in the guide. Do that and you'll be fine.

Hope this helps and Good luck to everyone!!!!
