Is there anyone in the Sacramento Area who is in the RN program? Any advice you can give? Any other schools to apply other than those in the Los Rios district, Sierra, and CSU SAC? Will do anything to get into program any advice is VERY appreciated!

Yuba College is only about 1 hr North and does a lot of Clinicals in Woodland. You might consider that too. I am doing my pre-reqs so I can apply there. They say it's an 18 month wait, but it depends on how much you have completed towards your degree already. Here is the website http://www.yccd.edu

Delta College in Stockton has a great program. It's less than 45 minutes from Sacramento. They base admittance on grades and the county you live in. There is also Solano Community College in Fairfield. They have a two year wait list for their ADN program. It's about an hour from Sacramento.

I just read in the Sacramento Bee that UC Davis just got funds for a Nursing program which may be up and running by Fall of 2008.

I'm still working through my prereqs at Sierra.

I think the article in the Bee mentioned (toward the end of the article) that the UCDavis PHD program would begin but the MSN and BSN would start in 2010 and 2011.

FAworld - You're right... that's what I get for trying to skim an article while packing up for a playgroup with a handful of 4-5 year olds and their moms. Well, that's terribly frustrating to find out. Oh and I found the story online here

I was so bummed when I realized the UCD timeline. My husband had brought me the article all excited. Oh well...

I have a 6 and a 2 year old so I know what you mean about trying to read while doing a thousand other things!

I'm in the Sac State program. I hear it's terribly difficult to get in these days, even worse than when I applied back in 2006. I firmly believe I got in just in time, and I believe it's because I had all 'A's in my sciences.

Grades are everything these days to get into a nursing program. I've heard its no less competitive than getting into med school. My only advice if you can stand the wait is to take only one major science per semester to allow yourself the time to commit to the course and get that 'A'. Don't overload your GE (get as many 'A's as you can!), but don't expect to be able to crank out a bunch of GE during the nursing program, either. I would not recommend taking a major science pre-req during the summer!

I am a single mom with children and took 4 years to get my sciences done at community college while picking away at the GE too. I tell myself it was the right thing for me to do even though it's taking me forever to graduate and I'm up to my eyeballs in student loans.. People who rush through the pre-req's and end up with C's and B's will have a hard (if not impossible) time getting into Sac State.

Also I hear community colleges are going to start looking at GPA's as well, rather than just the lottery system. I'm extremely grateful I've made it this far and that I'm one of the fortunate ones already enrolled in a program. I have come across many people who would make exceptional nurses but can't get into a program because of the terrible odds of the lottery and/or grades are not competitive enough.. I've heard that for people with lower grades can get accepted into community colleges and state colleges in more rural, central-California locations much more easily than big-city areas. I also hear So.Cal is much more hungry for nursing grads than No.Cal. My heart goes out to all of you taking pre-req's because I've been there! Best of luck to you all!

I am in the RN program at American River College and my first semester begins on 8/26. I spent 2 years applying at Sac City, ARC, Sierra, San Joaquin Delta, and Yuba. I never considered applying at Sac State because I already have a BS and I didn't want to rack up anymore student loans.

All I can say is don't give up. Some people are lucky to get in on their first try but for some, it takes up to 5 or 6 tries. I would suggest getting on a waiting list somewhere on your first try so that at least you know you will have a spot saved. I wish you the best of luck and I hope you get accepted somewhere fairly quickly!

Just so you know, Yuba College is no longer accepting everyone who meets the minimum requirements. What I was told by the counselor is that they are accepting 15 local and 15 non-local residents per semester to the wait list, based on GPA/test score. "Local" is pretty limited - I live 10 miles from the Woodland campus and am non-local (though Woodland would be local).

A lot of people are planning on Yuba as a backup school or not trying their hardest to get good grades, assuming that they'll eventually get in regardless, and this isn't the case anymore.

If you're doing any prerequisites at Woodland, Professor Shook, who teaches some sections of Anatomy and Physiology, is absolutely wonderful and I highly recommend taking a class from her if possible!
