Question - Anyone Get Into the CSUEB Program?

Hey All -

Just wondering if anyone made it into the CSUEB program..if so what were your grades, TEAS, and Pre-req GPA?

My overall GPA is a 4.0, my pre-req GPA is a 4.0... and I haven't taken my TEAS yet. I'm apply to the program this fall 08, to being fall 09.

I don't have any patient experience, or speak a second language.

There's another thread on this. Check there :]

Well I got rejected but here are my stats, if its of any help to you:

Overall GPA - 3.7
Pre-req GPA - 3.4
TEAS - 81.8%
No volunteer work
Took 4 years of Spanish, including 1 year AP and got college credit for it, so it should have showed up on my transcript somewhere, even though I didn't fill in one of those supplemental forms...

Anyway, I think you have a great chance and would stand to be a good candidate for the NS, but I suggest you start volunteering or learn a second language. It seems as if students do not get in on grades alone nowadays (even with straight A's), and the NS gets more and more competitive as we speak. Even the most well-rounded students who fit 3/3 criteria do not make it in, kinda ridiculous if you ask me!

You seem like a very intelligent student and I'm sure you will do well. Just be prepared for what is to come and don't worry about the TEAS - if you have a 4.0 I'm assuming you will ace that test like it ain't no thang.

Good luck again!

Re: Anyone Get Into the CSUEB Program?

I am currently in the nursing program. I had a 3.9 gpa prerequisites, and 3.83 overall GPA, No hospital experience, and no second language. I scored 91.2 on the TEAS, which put me in the 99th percentile.
That was my second time I took the TEAS. If you are allowed to take the TEAS more than once I would highly suggest it. I was told the average score goes up 10 points.

Now I am told the average GPA last year was 3.8 and the TEAS average was high as well. If I remember correctly, mid nineties percentile rank. You have an awesome GPA, so just concentrate on rocking that TEAS.

The supplemental points are nice but only a handful actually get them and it is possible to get into the program without them.

Best of luck to you.

Regards,
Jean

Jean, do you think they weight things at all by how much a student has completed? It seems a person can have a higher GPA if they haven't taken that many classes. It seems too, that in some ways it can be unfair - I know someone who was going premed and so took some super challenging classes - all the physics and calculus and bio molecular scare-me-to-death classes. Yet, she will now have a harder time getting into NS then someone who just took the liberal arts easy-peasy GE courses, even though she is infinitely smarter than some people with 4.0! I guess that applies for many second degree folks, too.

It just seems sort of unfair that people who have completed everything, all 9 prereqs and GE have their GPAs compared to those who might not have finished some of the hard preqs - o chem and micro or physio. I just wonder if they rank people at all based on % of completion.

Re: Anyone Get Into the CSUEB Program?

Mykdgirl, I would think if you do well on the TEAS (mid to upper 90th percentile program ranking) even without the supplemental points, you could probably get in with such an excellent GPA. Given your past academic success, you should have no trouble on the TEAS. Since they let you take the TEAS as many time as you please, I recommend taking it until you get a 99%.

Good luck!

My bad, I must have been referring to the volunteer experience and second language experience in regards to SFSU. Now I'm getting my NS requirements mixed up Too much to think about! Anywho, having a 4.0 to begin with puts you way above the rest, lucky you

Re: Anyone Get Into the CSUEB Program?

Hello Hotflashn,
Yes, they calculate based on GPA of the finished classes (and really it is only on the prereqs) and I believe you could only have 1 or 2 prerequisites still in progress. I was not finished with Physiology when I applied. They told me that grade would not count towards my acceptance. Once I was accepted then I just had to pass the class and send my transcripts. Of course, those classes do count towards your transferred GPA and most people who get into nursing school are really mental over their GPAs.
A high GPA is not indicative of how well you will actually do in nursing school. Nursing school is whole different animal. LOL.

Julz,
Not bad at all. I totally wish I had those supplemental points. I did have some volunteer experience which allowed me to get into SFSU, but CSUEB didn't take any volunteer experience, so I was just telling the OP not to give up hope if they didn't have them. Oh how much easier would it be now if I spoke a second language? Some of my patient's in clinicals don't speak English and I end up having to rely on family members to translate. Also some of my fellow nursing students are CNAs and so the first quarter's skill class was a piece of cake for them.

Best regards,
Jean

Hi - I was accepted and begin this fall. My pre-req GPA was probably around 3.8 and my overall GPA from college (way back when) was a 3.44. My TEAS test says my "Adjusted Individual Total Score" was 90%. I did not have any foreign language credit nor do I have any work/paid experience in patient care. Sounds like you're in my shoes but with a better GPA

Best of luck!
