What a pain right, I just want to take the class and finding micro, physiology and anatomy with open seats is tough.
I'm also trying to finish my pre-req at Southwestern College. I will be finishing Chem 100 in about 2 weeks. I will be taking Human Anatomy in the summer, and taking micro, physicology fall semester. It's been tough but I do want to finish and get started on this program already. I've been rushing to finish b'coz I wanted to get into the program by January 2009, but I recently got an e-mail that said," they require all prerequisites to be completed at the time of application. Students are no longer able to apply for the program in their last semester of their prerequisites. For example, if you will be enrolled in your remaining prerequisites during the Fall semester of 2008, you would be eleigible to apply for the Summer 2009 start date because all prerequisites would be completed by our March 1st deadline. " That kinda sucked coz I was hoping to finish all pre-req by Dec, and start Jan. Then what If I have to wait even longer b'coz of those who are ahead of me or are better candidates.

It is challenging but manageable as long as you DO NOT procrastinate...there is no room for falling behind since it is so fast paced. Nervous & excited is just how I felt before starting and I feel like that about starting my second semester too! Best of luck & again...Congrats!
Congratulations!!! Well my main question is, were you working at all???? I know i asked the counselor that and she didn't advice it but some people did work. Did you work??? and how did that affect you from studying and going to clinicals?

Hi,
I would check with the counselors, have you met with any of them yet? I believe it is 5 years for some of the pre-reqs but I could be wrong. I would double check with them before starting another class! Good luck!!

Assuming I only need Micro, A & P, and their pre-reqs I should be able to sign up for the summer 09 start, maybe, just maybe the spring 09. I hate waiting because I am so ready to start on a new career, but I just consider it more time to save money for living expenses etc...

If you could pick it again, would you? Has it been a challenge with the online portion? Have many people dropped from the program? Those are just a few questions but I am sure I'll have many more! Congrats to you too, you are on your way!!
I had my last final today and it feels so good to be done with the first semester! It has been wonderful! I would do it all over again in a heart beat because I truly want to be a nurse and if this program hadn't come along then I'd still be on a 2+ year waiting list!
The program itself is challenging because it is constant...no breaks or down time. You go from basic skills in health assessment to beginning clinicals and learning how to care for wounds, maintaining IVs and giving meds! I can't believe how much I know now compared to when I started 4 months ago! The online portion requires self-discipline. You have read and manage your time so that you finish all of the reading and leave time to take the quizzes on-line before the time deadlines. It is stressful and frustrating at times but
As for people dropping I think that everyone that dropped did so before we started the semester because I never heard of anyone dropping once we started and there are 65 or so of us.
Hope this helps your curiosity!

I kept my job in the ER but as per diem not part time. I worked maybe once or twice each month of this first semester. It is pretty difficult to work any more than that because you always have something due (it is never ending) and reading takes a lot of your time. I know that there are other people that also worked (more than I did) and they were able to manage but were a lot more stressed that I was. Personally, I decided that nursing school is stressful enough I don't need to add to it. So I picked up shifts if I could otherwise, I've lived off of my student loan!

Thanks for sharing. I start on June 2nd and am really looking forward to it! What hours are the clinicals? Can you switch with other students? My husband is deployed so I have daycare concerns. Thanks and congrats on being in your second semester!!

also did you have all your prereq done when your accepted? what is their criteria for accepting students?
sorry I have so many questions but I need to decide if I will go for it or not...I still have few prereq that I would need to go back and finish

The online portion consists of power point presentations, submitting assigments and taking quizzes.
The clinical portion is one 8hr. shift at the hospital but you have to go in the day before to pick your patient and get all of the info. on them. Class is two days a week (2hrs. each) sometimes once a week (4hrs.) and all exams are taken at school (Sharp Cabrillo) in the computer lab.
I had to take 3 prereqs before getting in but I did it and so did many others. As for their admissions criteria I wouldn't know anymore than what they told us. Meet all of the requirements and they take as many as they can. Now that we are going on the 3rd cohort of new students coming in and many more people know about the program, I'm sure it will be more competitive and they will be more picky about who they want. I don't know how they decide that. Best of luck! We do have mothers in the program, we even had a pregnant student who gave birth 2 weeks before finals...she took finals and finished the semester! It will be challenging if you decide to do it but it will be worth it!
