Hi MN,
I went through the same thing you're experiencing now...but, at 44 years old, I decided that I didn't have the time to wait around to see if anyone would accept me.
I've heard the horror stories; waiting lists a mile long, people applying over and over and over to the same schools, lottery's, etc., so I decided to go the private route and began an LVN program (without having to have any pre-reqs first) that would put me on the floor of a hospital/LTC facility within 11 months.
Once I get my LVN, I can do a quick step-up program to RN WHILE I'm working as a nurse, which is infinitely better than going 2-4 years with NO income to speak of!
I suppose if I were a young twenty-something, the time factor wouldn't have been such an issue, but I'm not, so it is.
I checked out both Western Career College, as well as the new kid on the block, Unitek. I'm sure you can figure out who I picked!
WCC seemed too eager to simply take my money then "move me along..." down their conveyor belt. Also, their program was 18 months long as opposed to Unitek's 11 month program (for the same money.)
I'm a bit long in the tooth to be chasing after BSN/MSN programs...I just want to be a simple RN (although never say never on the BSN...

)
As for my choice of schools, I can honesty say that I am pleased with my choice. Like all nursing schools, we have great teachers and poor teachers, but the program (no matter where you go) is what YOU make of it.
The "light" at the end of the tunnel for all of us is not graduation (although that is nice!), but passing the NCLEX.
In our business, you can be a great student and graduate from the program without difficulty, but until you get that envelope in the mail, you aren't a nurse!
I wish you (all of you) the best of luck in whichever path you take. Nursing school is (for me) equal parts excitement and terror, but it is never dull!
Regards,
Michael
