The agony of waiting for "the" letter

I am literally driving myself insane waiting for my acceptance letter! The deadline is April 2nd, so I will be biting my fingernails for quite some time. What to do to pass the time??!! I've taken all of the courses, non nursing, required to complete the degree. I feel confident that I will get accepted, but there is always the possibility of not getting accepted. I know that slots are limited due to the shortage of professors, and lack of funding. The approximate number of applicant rejections, yearly, in Texas is over 4,200.
I have no plan B if I don't get accepted. I would have to wait an entire year to re-apply. My other option is to complete 4 prereq's at a different school and apply next spring for fall of 08. I would prefer not to go that route.
What do you do to pass the time? Are any of you currently employed in a health care facility? What type of work could I apply myself for without a degree??

Thanks

Re: The agony of waiting for "the" letter

Hi Johnna,

I am with you, girl!! Our deadline is March 2, and letters go out sometime in the middle/end of April. I have no more nails to bite, have already bitten them off!! I too have finished my pre reqs and am now working on credits toward my BSN. But that will be awhile. I am just keeping busy working on Chem, 2 Governments, and a World Lit class. Plus having 4 rugrats tends to keep my time limited thinking about "The Letter." It is h**l waiting though. I applied last semester, knowing that I probably wouldn't get in because I was taking A&P2, Micro and a Psych class, but I was 3 points away, so I feel a lot more confident that I will get in, but uncertainty is the killer of all things!!! Keep busy with something, anything, and keep praying that the letter that comes will say Congratulations...!!

Re: The agony of waiting for "the" letter

I got my letter last Saturday and promptly faxed my "Yes, you bet your arse I'll be attending the Nursing program this Fall!" letter. LOL

I was told verbally that I would get in the program in Fall of '06 then about two weeks before the end of the semester they told me I'd been waitlisted for a year...needless to say I was a touch bitter.

I took the extra time and got ALL of my pre-reqs out of the way, even for the Bachelor's degree. When I graduate in 2009 with my ADN, I'll have only 4-5 advanced nursing courses to take to get a BSN.

Don't get too worked up if you don't get the letter, do some research and work on a plan-B and even a plan-C.

Good luck to both of you.

Re: The agony of waiting for "the" letter

If you haven't taken a Medical Terminology/Basic Nursing Skills course then I would suggest doing so. My school just added it as a new pre-req for Fall 07. I am really glad. I have just started going over the material and it is so imformative and helpfull.

Ours is just a 2 hr credit course and it goes March through May. So maybe go that route...or for goodness sake just enjoy the rest until the letter!!

I am still in 4 classes (AP2, Micro, Stats, Health Skills) and would love a break!

I applied to El Centro in Dallas...should find out mid-April. I hope it goes by fast!

Re: The agony of waiting for "the" letter

My letter should be here this week... maybe next week. I don't know... I'm finishing up pre-reqs this semester and I've been told by many that this particular school typically accepts mostly those students who've completed all pre-reqs prior to applying before students like myself. So, I have a feeling this won't be my semester. But I figured, hey, since I qualify to start applying, it wouldn't hurt to at least try Needless to say, the biggest part of me is not expecting a 'congratulations' letter... although a girl can hope! That being said, I absolutely have a plan B...in my case, I'd be naive not to! As far as passing the time during the wait... this last 4 weeks has been excrutiating! And it's totally not about receiving a rejection notice but just the unknown factor of it all. I have a full load with 5 classes, two rugrats of my own and a husband who is about to deploy for six months so it's quite chaotic at home but that still doesn't stop the anxiety about that dang letter!!!

Re: The agony of waiting for "the" letter

I completely understand about waiting for "the" letter. I have about 2 weeks until I found out and I just really want to know either way! Our deadline to have our application in was Feb. 1. They said we should know something by March 15. I am also driving my Fiance crazy about the letter. I think he wants the letter as much as I want it now...just so I will be quite about it! lol

Re: The agony of waiting for "the" letter

Well, good luck to all! Like Kirk said, having a backup plan is the way to go. I know a lot of people who apply to the program still having several classes to go and then stressing because they have Micro and A&P 2 to take while also taking nursing classes. Our school is recommending to get ALL pre reqs out of the way before applying, even though all you really have to have is English 1, A&P1 and Human Growth. They have even changed up the application to award points for being done with the Sciences and all. We used to get points for having Med Term and Health related classes, but now they are just focusing on the Sciences. I took Med Term 1 last year, but didn't take the 2nd just because they changed. So...I can always go back to take it,and there are a few more classes to take for my BSN pre reqs. Including College Algebra!!

So, just relax and take it easy, cuz once you get into the program, ain't no more relaxation for a while!!!

Hey! I'm from SC too. Did you apply to MUSC in Charleston? I did and am on the same timeline as far as waiting for a letter.

Re: The agony of waiting for "the" letter

The waiting does not get any better as you get closer to the expected notification date, trust me! I had my app in to UCLA by the deadline of December 15th, so by the time they notify us in late March, that will be over three months of waiting. Grr...I will only forgive them if they give me good news!

Re: The agony of waiting for "the" letter

For us it is a letter and a POSTCARD!! If your letter doesn't have a postcard along with it, then you know you didn't get in. My plan A failed, but my plan B is going along great. What I did was look at ALL of the schools in my area and found out what was needed for each school.
I seriously hate waiting, but you just have to keep saying to yourself "I'm going to get in!!" You will make it!! Just never give up!
