Hello,

I would like to get accepted to an RN program (preferably ADN) for Fall '07. I'm getting humbled by what I'm hearing as the difficulty of this process. I'm considering applying to a dozen or more programs. I live in and love Portland, Oregon. My spouse said she would move if I could get into a program. I would like to hear if folks know of particular schools that don't have a waiting list or not as competitive to get in, anywhere, any kind. Does anyone know of a good school in a progressive community or have success stories for the Portland schools. Any and all input welcome.

I apologize if this topic has been posted recently, I couldn't find.

Hi George,
One of the biggest obstacles in my area is that many of the CCs have residency requirements. Ask in advance because some have to take a 2.0 gpa student who is in-county before a 4.0 out-of-county resident. Since their requirements are all a bit different I'd start checking them out. My personal strategy was to get as close to a 4.0 gpa as I could in my pre-reqs and I test pretty good so my score on the NLN entrance exam was high. I also met with the director to get a little face time and also find out the scoop right from the top. Good luck to you, Jules

Clark College in Vancouver is a cc program that goes by gpa, having pre-req's done, having a cna license, and a few brownie points if you live in Washington, but a lot of Portlanders apply there.

They start groups 3 times a year. There's no lottery, essay, or interview.

It's no nonsense, I like that.

Hi George,

If you are interested in moving south, there are some options here in Humboldt and Mendocino Counties (California). College of the Redwoods (Eureka, CA) accepts applications in February and is on a lottery system, so you have just about as good of a chance as anyone else who's applying (as long as you have completed all the necessay pre-reqs). Mendocino College is even more rural and thus is much easier to get into as there are not as many applicants. I am told that Mendocino College goes by grades (so not as much hinges on luck). I would say that the more "progressive pick" would by College of the Redwoods because it is closest to Arcata and Humboldt State University. Mendocino is beautiful and rural and not too far from San Francisco if you need to visit civilization every once in a while.

There is no where as nice as Portland- if I had half a chance I'd be applying there!

I know this is an older post, but Mendocino is not that easy to enter as it is one of the only ADN prgrams serving at least 2 counties. We're all impacted. Need financial laxative.
