Hello,
I am new to this site! I want to know if you guys think i am to old to start school? I work as a Ophthalmic tech for the past few years love helping people love the job just feel bored the same thing everyday not challenging enough and the pay is bad.... I always wanted to be Nurse but scared i wont make the school i am not good in math at all But love Science !! There is a 15 month LPN program in my area i am looking into but, I have been reading on here LPN's do not make much and the jobs are phasing out??? i will like to be a RN can i take the LPN training and then take more classes to become an RN? and how much longer will it take?? I am very nervous and worried about spending all that money in school if they are doing away with LPNs ???? and i have a 7 yr old boy is this the right field to go into or is he going to be neglected??? with my studies????

Re: 35/f Married w/3 kids I am too old ?

A 35 year-old person is fairly young.

I once knew a lady who completed an LVN/LPN program at the young age of 55. The last time I saw her, she was energetically filling her role as an LVN charge nurse during the night shift at a Southern California nursing home.

In other words, you're not too old. Go for the gold, since the time will pass whether or not you become a nurse.

Nope, never too old. If it is something you really want to do then grab with 2 hands and go for it

You are not to old at all! I'm 43, single, and have two kids ages 8 and 13. I started my prereqs when I was 40 and will be starting a BSN program this fall. I'll graduate at the age of 45. If nursing is what you want to do...go for it!

Re: 35/f Married w/3 kids I am too old ?

Hi,
I can relate to your fears about starting school also. But since I found this site I have found the courage to move forward just by reading the responses I received from asking the same question you did...am I too old?
I am 37, and a single mother of two. My boys are 15 and 11. I am terrified of how it is all going to work out, but if I don't try I will never know. I have talked to my children about it and they are now offering me support so we will go through this as a team. I want to be a positive role model for them also.
I have also heard many stories that we will be the average age of students in the class, so we are not alone! LOL...Age should not be a factor, if anything we are more determined to succeed and have many experiences that will help us get there!
If it is in your heart...go for it, one day at a time! Good luck to you!

Re: 35/f Married w/3 kids I am too old ?

I just turned 39, I have two daughters (6 and 16) a husband and a full time job.

I just graduated LPN school (15 mth program full time) this past Thursday! And plan on starting in September to take a couple of pre-requsites needed for the LPN to RN bridge course.

I graduated with honors AND my children never felt neglected. My husband was a great support person for me and took over a lot of the jobs in the home and childrearing that I normally do. He did a great job and the girls are no worse for the wear!

Go for it. Think about it, in 5 years you can be 5 years older and have your nursing license OR you can be 5 years older and not have it. Either way you are going to age each and every year Wouldn't you rather do it WITH your nursing license? Follow your

As long as you can perform the essential functions of nursing when you graduate, you'll be fine

Agree with all the above posters. As far as lpn's being phased out, I've heard the opposite. They should be in great demand to work in nursing homes, particularly as the first boom generation gets to the age where they will be in need of ltc assistance in a few more years.
