I'll be starting my pre-reqs in the fall...yay! And you all have been very helpful here..so thank you!
I want to spread out my sciences and really understand the course, so I've decided to (or will try to), take 1 science course per semester starting in the spring. I'll try and get all the other core ones out of the way, so I can focus on the sciences. I have to take Anat, Phys (seperately) and micro.
But with that being done, it will take me exactly 2 yrs to get the pre-reqs done, then apply for the program which, if I'm accepted, will start the following semester.

Does this all sound alright? I was hoping to start as soon as possible, but at the same time I want to understand what I'm learning.
I've also decided to NOT take any science courses in the summer...I'll finish some core classes there.

Opinions??

sounds like a great plan, its good to have one in place but be flexible things change and just go with the flow.

I started my pre reqs fall of 04 I am ready to apply in the fall for the 08 spring start class. The 2 years will FLY by.

are you going to school part time or full time? it took me 3 semesters (or 1.5 years) to complete nursing pre-reqs. i was originally an art major but due to being a new parent i decided it was best to go with nursing, so i started my nursing pre-reqs in the spring of 06 and was part time, taking a&pI and psychology. i had actuall completed other pre-reqs like human growth/development, english, humanties, etc under my old major so i was set witth that. in the fall of 06 i took a&pII, chemistry (since it was a pre-req for micro) and some other filler classes so i could make it to full time status. this past semester i took micro, college algebra, women's studies, and american history (full time again).

anway, yeah 2 years is a reasonable amount of time to complete pre-reqs but i think you can complete them a bit sooner, depending on if you can go to school full time or not!

It took me 2 and a half years, with summer school. Mind you, i changed my major mid-2nd semester...but, that time frame sounds just about right! Dont rush it, the more understanding you have of the basic stuff, the easier the deeper subjects will become...

Thanks a lot! I will be going full time, and I'd love to finish in a year and a half..so we'll see how everything falls.
I don't want to take 2 sciences at once...so we'll see...

I thought the same way as you before I began my freshman year of college. I talked to my nursing advisor and she talked me out of splitting up the sciences. The classes are hard, but they are not impossible you CAN have a good handle on them if you take them together plus it really prepares you for nursing school.

You will have to learn a LOT at once in nursing school and you cannot afford to space it out to learn the basics. The basics have to be mastered as they are thrown at you. In my opinion, I think you should just take the pre-reqs over the course of a year and just be very dedicated. That is what I did, and now 3 years later, I am 1 year away from my BSN and it feels great!

It is admirable that you want to learn the content very well by taking your time but this is not a luxury you have in nursing school so you might as well try to prepare yourself for that kind of fast paced learning as much as possible.

It just depends...are they TRUE pre-reqs or are the courses co-reqs.

There is a difference.

Pre-reqs are what the nursing school requires before you are even allowed to apply for the program.

Co-reqs are what they recommend you take before starting the program, but will accept you anyway if you haven't taken the courses. Most of the schools will strengthen your application or add points (if they admit based on a point system), if you have a certain sequence of courses completed before hand.

It's very important to find out.

My school required all the sciences (along with some other classes) be done before you could apply for the wait list, so it takes at least 3 semesters to get them done.
I had to take Intro to Biology as a pre-req to A&P I, then A&P I, then A&P II and Micro together.
I knew a few students who got permission to take A&P I and II together in the same semester, but they really struggled.

I'm pretty sure that I have to finish ALL pre-reqs, which inludes those 2 science classes I need...before applying.
There is no waitlist, you're either in our out. And if out..then you can apply again next term.
Now I'm thinking of doing Anat and Phys together...alone..only those 2 classes, then the last semester Micro.
I might call the nursing dept. and ask some ppl there too.

I'm starting pre-reqs in the fall as well... and it will definitely take up to 2 years before I can apply to nursing school. It takes that long for most people I think.
