Tips on Prioritizing patient tasks??

Hello peeps,

Just wondering if you any of you can give me tips on how to tackle prioritizing patient care tasks?? Thanks

Example: A patient scheduled for a laproscopic cholesystectomy. Teaching the daughter of a patient medication regimen. Giving report to a RN. A patient requiring a dressing change. In which order would you do these??

Re: Tips on Prioritizing patient tasks??

I think priority patient for lap chol surgery becouse its really important that patient is ready for surgery, #2 patient with dressing change, #3 teaching the doughter and #4 giving report to RN. Taking care of actual patient needs always comes first. This is just my opinion I might be wrong.

I agree with these, however I would do one thing slighly different which is to give report, then teach. In my opinion, it is more of a priority to give report then to teach. I see it like this: teaching can wait but giving report cannot.

I would give report before doing teaching but for a different reason, by giving report the R.N. can then do the cares for his/her patient(s) and you will be able to spend time teaching the daughter what she needs to know in a unhurried manor.

That is a priority questions in terms of order. I would first give report to RN, #2 lap chole surgery #3 dressing change #4 teaching daughter

when I asked the question, I meant it with the intent of having the question answered from the "NCLEX world" instead of the "real world" perspective.

Re: Tips on Prioritizing patient tasks??

OOPS I see my mistake. OK. #1 lap chole patient (since there are safety issues and time constraint) #2 dressing change ( promotion of healing and infection control) #3 teaching daughter(lack of knowledge) #4 give report (delegation of duties)
