Everybody in NY State has to complete this (from nurses to physicians to teachers to attorneys). Mainly, anybody who has the potential to provide care for a child that is being abused, his/her family, etc. I remember reading that you cannot be excused unless you give valid reason (i.e.: Took a similiar course in college - psych nursing does not count - or for any given reason, you won't be providing care to these types of patients). I took it after I took my boards. I don't remember what I put on my application - maybe that I'd complete the course at a later date. You will still be assigned an ATT whether or not you have taken this course. I opted to do an online course for $30. It took me about an hour and a half to read through, and then complete a short 15 question test afterwards. The website URL is
http://www.accesscontinuingeducation...000/course.htm. They tell you immediately whether you have passed or failed (you need above a 12/15), if you failed, you just go over the readings again and retake it (no stress!).
If you feel uncomfortable doing it online, go to the NY Board of Nursing website, they'll give you a list of acceptable programs in your area and around the U.S. Hope this helps.
