Question? - Help explain NCLEX to family....

OK girls and boys...I started this thread to see if anyone else is having a hard time getting the seriousness of this test through to their family. After HESI and nursing school I think they are just as burnt out as I am but I am having a hard time getting them to understand why I have to study again and how important it is.

How did you tell your hubby/wife/kids? It's like they don't care and I KNOW they don't understand....

Shed some light and maybe we can get some family to read the posts and show just how stressed we all are. Thanks

Re: Help explain NCLEX to family....

I'm not trying to be facetious, but until you pass the NCLEX, you don't get to work. Or, @ least, not as a Registered Nurse. It's the licensing test. Kinda like a driver's license test. You gotta be licensed to drive and to practice nursing.

So if the family wants to see a return on their investment, they'll do everything they can to help you study for that baby!!!

p.s. GOOD LUCK!

Re: Help explain NCLEX to family....

I just explained it to my husband and kids as my final, final. With out passing I could not work as a nurse. I also let my kids know how much I had to pay to take it, and I couldnt take it twice, so I had to get it the 1st time.

I remember the day I found out I officially passed and had a lic number I drove up to my Grandparents, walked in and said "I am a nurse" and they said "ya we know--didnt you get our card" (they sent me a graduation card) and I said "no--I just got my lic number today, and you dont have the internet so there is no way you knew--I myself just found out 2 hours ago--I just took my test yesterday" Their response was "ya we knew you would pass" like no big deal...to this day, I still cant believe that conversation. They didnt get it, they just assumed since I was a good student I would automatically become a nurse just because I graduated.

My family is the same way. I took my NCLEX today, I'm so worried about it and try to talk to my family about it and they're like "You know you passed, why are you worrying??" They have no idea what it's like, just because I made good grades in school doesn't mean I automatically get a license! Wish it were like that, then I wouldn't have to worry to death for the next few days!!!!!!!!!
