correct answer to Sickle Cell crisis question

The Nclex review books are inconsistent with correct answer to sickle cell crisis question. The question is what do you do first if a patient comes to ER with sickle cell crisis? Answer to one book is administer IV fluid, another book says correct answer is administer oxygen. So what is the correct answer????????

Re: correct answer to Sickle Cell crisis question

I would say fluids because dehydration is what causes the cells to sickle..oxygen is obvi really important too but that is what I'd say...

Re: correct answer to Sickle Cell crisis question

actually i read a very go0d bo0k 0f MOSBY regarding sickle cell crisis.. y0u have t0 cho0se administer 0xygen 0n the 0pti0n if the 0xygen is a n0nrebreather mask because it delivers Fi02 0f 90-100%.. And if y0u have t0 cho0se between administering 0xygen via nasal cannula and IV fluids, g0 with the IV fluids because 02 via nasal cannula 0nly delivers 40% 0f 02..Hope it helps!!

Re: correct answer to Sickle Cell crisis question

definately IV fluids! Think about the nature of the disease. (what good is O2 when the body doesn't have the capacity to carry it?) This is one of my favorite websites to inform people what to watch for (and why) http://www.scinfo.org/faqdisease.htm

Also, dehydration is the most common preventable cause of an episode.

Re: correct answer to Sickle Cell crisis question

Hey, here a quick way to remember nursing interventions to sickle cell I was taught in nursing school...
"HOP to it"
H-hydrate
O-oxygenate
P-pain Management
Small things like this will help you recall content when taking to NCLEX
