Saw this on the news last night. What it amounts to is having a multi-organ transplant using her own organs. Hope the outcome is good. This could be a hope-giving, life-saving surgery for a number of candidates for whom nothing less drastic will work.
I wish the news had expanded on her health status, as far as all the variables, does she smoke; drink; htn?; dm; copd?; labs. cholesterol, etc. In other words, was she a good risk? Many of my patients will see this and then think they aren't getting good care because we aren't doing something this spectacular/invasive with them.
Obviously, this dear lady was a good candidate and she had a support system to help her along the way. Hope to have updates of the positives AND negatives broadcast.
