Re: very good article about epidemic of diabetes in USA

During my recent visit with family, I learned from my Mom that my family history of diabetes is even stronger than I thought. I already knew that my Dad and grandfather died from Type 1 complications while my maternal grandmother had Type 2 and many male paternal cousins have, had and/or died from complications of both types. What I didn't know, however, is that my maternal grandfather's parents both died of complications, one of Type 1 and one of Type 2. My grandfather himself had Type 2, something else I was never told. He died of something else, though. Right now, my younger sister is the only one of my Mom's children to be dxed, but both my brother and I are at increased risk d/t weight and elevated blood sugars. Ugh.

Re: very good article about epidemic of diabetes in USA

I have DM II and have a strong family hx of it. Also I am overweight-yes I've tried for years to lose with no success.

I have a choice or taking oral meds, one that makes me gain even more weight or one that has me running to the bathroom all the time. With the second one, you'd think I'd lose more weight, but no. I lost the weight I'd gained on the first, but still can't budge below that. And yes I exercise and watch what I eat.

Re: very good article about epidemic of diabetes in USA

i don't know of family history, my mothers father and gmother died of flu, i think that my fathers family were rather long-lifed but i don't know of any specifics
however i am overweight and my triglycerides are out of sight..i don't have any fasting highs but i know that i am still at risk...losing weight is harder than quitting smoking because you can quit cold turkey on smoking but you have to eat to live
we really do need a lot of research on weight, dm, and related issues
