UK: ‘Nice’ nurses to get free chocolate biscuits

‘Nice’ nurses to get free chocolate biscuits
The Sunday Times - UK

... Two years ago a resolution at the annual congress of the Royal College of Nursing proposed that nurses were now “too clever to care” and suggested that the ...

...an editorial in Nursing Times magazine said nurses did not need bribes to be helpful and pleasant to patients. It said: “Excessive workloads and paperwork prevent nurses from spending time with their patients and caring for them properly. This is a fundamental problem that can never be rectified with a hot drink and a biscuit, or other such imports from industry.”

Re: UK: ‘Nice’ nurses to get free chocolate biscuits

In recent years there have been growing concerns about nurses who are “too posh to wash” and prefer to spend their time on administrative and technical tasks rather than basic care.

I hate the way this is worded. Prefer to spend their time on administrative and technical tasks? I believe what they mean is hanging IV's instead of smiling at another patient because it's the priority. Or maybe calling a med into pharmacy is one of those administrative tasks that they are "preferring" to do instead of chatting with the patient?

Or maybe their day is spent like this:

This is so offensive! I am not a puppy and do not need a treat for being a good girl! Just a little respect, please!

If I was one of these UK nurses, you know where I would tell them to put their biscuits!!!!

"Too posh too wash" ????? It's not about being "too posh" its about appropriate allocation of scarce resources. These people don't have a clue what they are talking/writing about. It doesn't take a degree in nursing to be able to wash somebody's butt -anybody can do that. However anybody cannot do the various technical and administrative tasks the writer alludes to. Duh!Would you hire an aeronautical engineer to make a paper plane for you kid? No, of course not. I'm truly glad to have left UK nursing behind if this is an example of the attitude toward nurses over there. I have to go calm down now -maybe I'll have a "nice" cup of tea and a chocolate biscuit.

This was discussed on our breakfast talk show this morning (Sunrise) and the people debating it ended up saying they felt it was insulting and the nurses were probably overworked, underpaid and doing too much paperwork to smile.

I agree!

Re: UK: ‘Nice’ nurses to get free chocolate biscuits

I do have to admit that a cookie (biscuit as it's called across the pond) and a coffee do make me smile, but only when I'm in my pajamas watching a good movie. Sorry, but a cookie and a coffee won't make the mounds of paperwork, phone calls, tasks, and other random b*ll sh*t any easier to do... NO, not even if it's double chocolate chip. I'll just get crumbs on the keyboard! I can just see this patient scenerio: "Uh, sir sorry about your wound dressing... I've got to do it over 'cause a chocolate chip from my complemetary cookie that's supposed to make me smile at you more just fell into your pressure ulcer. I know that's gross and you're upset, but look on the bright side... I'm smiling!"

Re: UK: ‘Nice’ nurses to get free chocolate biscuits

This is sickening. As I was reading it a picture of a doggie wagging its tail for a bone came to mind. Apparently that is how we nurses are viewed by administration. I usually smile and am nice to my patients but it can be hard sometimes when you have 2 patients crashing, a drunk calling you nasty names and you realize you haven't even peed in 7 hours and decide that you should at least be able to do that so you take 3 precious minutes to pee. Of course a meal break is a practically unheard of luxury. ANd no its not because we are maryr marys, it's because most of us really care about the patients we are taking care of a feel a real responsibility to do as much as we can with as little resources as we have.
A chocolate chip cookie would not do it for me. I am at least worth a boston creme from dunkin donuts.
