The ugly truth about life with MRSA

"The specialist couldn't explain why the outbreaks kept coming back, but the fact that they popped up where I sweat was a clue. I work out at the gym three times a week and also run. I'd come straight from the gym and start working in the garden, changing clothes first but waiting until I was back inside to shower. Bad idea. The specialist told me to shower and change clothes right away so that bacteria wouldn't have a chance to breed, and to wash my workout clothes every day"...

Re: The ugly truth about life with MRSA

I would never go to a gym for this reason. Numerous people sharing equipment, all who are sweating. There are going to be bacteria resistant plastics that will be take the place of many of these exercising machines, but until they do I would not want to use them. Have you tried setting up your own place at home for exercising?

I shower immediately after work each day for this very reason.

If I have anything on me that I could bring home from work, I want to wash it off ASAP!!

I also segregrate my scrubs from the rest of my laundry.

Re: The ugly truth about life with MRSA

It's really terrible. We have so many patient on contact isolation for MRSA. Can you imagine that wear the gown and glove all the time when you go inside patient's room? As a nurse, it's very hard to do this. Deliver a cup of ice, do the vital sign, check FS......

Oh my gosh! Worry much? We spend a few hours a week at the gym with people who sweat, but we spend 36+ hours at work with stuff that's three times worse. What you see at the gym is probably tame compared to what's waiting for you when you clock in...

Re: The ugly truth about life with MRSA

Heh... I still bear the scars of a horrific MRSA abscess that I had several years ago, and treated with 30 days of Bactrim DS and doxycycline. The facility I worked for at the time had 6 residents on MRSA contact isolation, all of them had contracted MRSA from the hospital, and isolation gear was in short supply.
