Re: UCLA Nursing opens to undergraduates

The undergraduate nursing major used to be offered widely. Upper tier colleges and universities (Vanderbilt, Duke, Northwestern, etc.) dropped them for any number of reasons (depending upon who you talk to). First, probably because highly qualified women started going into law, medicine, etc. Second, the salaries nurses earned post-graduation did not make nursing graduates wealthy alumni who would pour money back into the school.

It's good to see that UCLA coming around.

Re: UCLA Nursing opens to undergraduates

Just a little venting session: During my second year at UCLA, the year I seriously thought about declaring nursing as a major, was the year they discontinued the program. I was thinking about dropping out of UCLA to attend a community college to pursue the RN. Now, with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology, thousands of dollars of school loans, and approximately two years left to wait on California's community college nursing programs...I am really regretting my decision...

Unfortunately, applying to an entry level master's program and accelerated BSN programs will be a long shot (what w/ the tough competition out there and my not-so-great GPA) -- thanks UCLA!

Why not just attempt getting accepted into one of these programs? If you're still in the L.A. area, MSMC has an accelerated program. The GPA requirement is a 3.0. Something to think about. If your GPA is lower than this, you can always go to C.C. and raise your Cumlative GPA. It will probably be quicker than sitting on the waiting list for 2 or more years. If you need more info on MSMC, shoot me an e-mail. Best of luck to you.

What is MSMC? And/or rather, where is it?

Is there really over a 2-year wait for community colleges in So. CA?

Would I be better off starting locally and then transferring? So that I would have better odds of getting in to a program earlier than that?

I have all my prereqs and just about anything else that can be taken outside of the RN program itself completed. In addition, I already have my bachelor's in another field. My current GPA is about 3.7, but I have the added liability of not being a current resident!

Mount St Mary's College (MSMC) is a women's college in West Los Angeles. It is an outstanding school. I can tell you what I know about the accelerated program, however, as I am not an advisor, I am not officially qualified to give you definative answers. You can find the school's site at www.msmc.la.edu. You may also contact me if you wish, with questions pertaining to living in this city.

Yes, most C.C.'s in California have waiting lists of two years or longer. California also has one of the worst nursing shortages in the country, and our shortage is only expected to deepen.

I'll probably be looking in the Inland Empire -- Riverside/San Bernardino as that's where I'll be "rooming".....I had no idea that the waits were so long....here in St. Louis it kind of depends on which program you're interested in...the accelerated programs are more merit-based, so I think you can usually apply prior to the following semester....the community college was on an 12 to 18-month wait last I knew....I could start in the fall and see about a transfer, but I don't know how viable an option that is....and I'm not getting any younger!!

I'm in the same boat. I was actually pre-Nursing at UCLA for a year, went to community college to do some of the pre-reqs, and returned to get my Bachelor's in Psychology.

In talking to people, there are all sorts of programs out there. The cheap, but quality schools have the longest wait lists. Some of the more expensive schools have less of a wait lists.

Don't get discouraged. If you're gonna spend the time waiting to get in, maybe look into getting your CNA for experience. I'm really limited in what I can do...stay-at-home mom with 2 toddlers...maybe by the time they are in elementary school, I'll be able to start nursing school...yippee!
:hatparty:

Good luck to ya!

Good luck to you, Pixie. I hope you like SoCal. Riverside is a very nice place.
