The company, which owns 68 hospitals, also agreed to divest nine hospitals in New Orleans, Philadelphia and Florida, sources said.
Philly is a tight reimbursement market with just 2 major insurance payers who watch $$$ carefully along with Medicare and MA.

Reminds me of phrase: "Yea reap what yea sow."

Re: Tenet to pay $900 million in global fraud settlement

I've never heard anything good about Tenet (or any of the other for-profit hospital chains, for that matter). I worked for several years as a psych surveyor for my state and CMS, and we had one Tenet hospital in our territory. I always had a "bad taste in my mouth" when I left there after a routine survey or complaint investigation -- a lot of the individual nurses were obviously trying to do a responsible, competent job, but the administration was clearly committed to cutting every corner they could, squeezing every nickel until it screamed, and "playing fast and loose" with the rules as much as they could get away with. Not surprisingly, there were some bad outcomes, more often than most of the other hospitals we covered, and the administration always had some bizarre explanation about why it wasn't really the hospital's fault and they hadn't really done anything wrong.

Re: Tenet to pay $900 million in global fraud settlement

The article quoted only tells part of the story. Tenet found a loophole in the payment system, gobbled up hospitals and maximized on the amount of money. The courts could of hit Tenet with $1.5 billion but they settled with a judgement of $715 million. The first payment is due in 2007 and will be paid for by closing or selling off 11 hospitals and dismissing thousands of workers that depended on their jobs. The workers never knew it was coming after being told for years how dedicated Tenet was to their facility. Tenet employees learned it by receiving an email from Trevor Fetter the CEO, that began with the words "GOOD NEWS" and a few paragraphs down learned that 11 hospitals were being dropped. How would you feel if you got this letter? Good news your out of a job. Days later another half hearted letter came reminding the workers to continue to do their best until sold or closed. This is on top of benefits being decreased and raises frozen for months. Workers got more information about the closing from the newpaper reports then they got from management. Wouldn't you feel like you got slapped in the face. In 2008 when the next $200,000 is due another 10-15 hospitals will get the slap too and in 5 years when all the payments are finished their won't be a Tenet system left.

I would be very surprised if they actually had to pay the whole fine. Tenet lawyers will come up with some hocus pocus or call in some favors from our esteemed senators or congressman.

Re: Tenet to pay $900 million in global fraud settlement

eek. I work for a Tenet hospital, although not in one of the states listed. I work in the Women's Hospital which is not exactly part of our main hospital (totally different budget..etc) The women's side seems to be world's away from the main hospital. I work L and D and we actually staff one on one care for our patients unlike any other hospital in the entire area. SO I hear things about Tenet in general but mostly I think i live in a fantasy world LOL..I sure hope I dont get a good news your fired letter
