Thousands of East Anglian teachers and nurses will get loans of up to £50,000 to help them buy their own house as prices continue to soar, the Government announced last night.

The £690m "key worker living" programme is designed to boost recruitment and retention in areas where the overheating housing market is putting public servants off moving in.

It comes as the gap between earnings and the price of starter homes is widening - pricing thousands of people, including key workers, out of the market.

The average salary in Norfolk is currently £23,105, while the average house costs £154,000 - or £99,000 for a starter home.
