Taking on nurses, Schwarzenegger may be kicking the wrong butts

Just last week he trash-talked a group of nurses protesting his decision to delay a planned increase in nurse hirings, saying they were among the special interests who "don't like me in Sacramento because I am always kicking their butts."

The public loves the performance. Schwarzenegger enjoys a fairly stable 65% approval rating. What's more, California's economy has improved under his leadership.

At the end of the Davis administration, 76% of California voters said they believed the state was going in the wrong direction, according to the nonpartisan Field poll. Today the figure is 38%, and 46% think things are heading upward.

I hope California nurses kick his butt. Time or Newsweek, I can't remember which had a lengthy article on Arnie this week. There was a picture of nurses protesting him. So the nurses are getting good publicity and his foot is in his mouth for calling them "special interest".

Arnold's style of leadership is not geared for the long term. Movies, books, and popularity contests all have their limits on how long they last. Remember Jesse Ventura from Minnesota? He is more remembered for the off-the-wall things he said than anything good he did for the state. Arnold's ego is bigger than the state of California so give it some time. All rockets eventually crash and burn.

I'm sure you right. Hopefully it will be sooner rather than later.

And let's not forget that CA's model RN-patient ratio law was passed under Gov. Gray Davis. I do wonder how many RNs voted for Gov. Davis during the recall election though. I have known many a health care professional to vote against his/her professional self-interest at election time.

I agree but I bet they don't do it a second time.

I dunno about that. Talking with my co-workers here they all think Arnold was right in delaying the 1:5 ration in order to study the effects further. We have 1:6 which is great. Change takes time.

These are ER nurses, med-surg nurses, OB nurses, a wound care nurse.

Sometimes the loudest voices drown out what others may think and the media focuses on that. I think it would be interesting to have a reporter come and interview nurses that I work with.

I've said it before . . .nursing is not a monolith. That is why I believe unionizing will never work for everyone. Just being a member of allnurses for the past two years has shown me that we rarely ever reach a concensus on anything.

(I thought Arnold's "girly-man" comment was funny - but then I love SNL)

Not being a nurse yet I can't comment on the proper ratio. However, being old enough to have voted for Carter and going through my third career change in part due to governmental policies, I will vote from now on for the person that has MY interests at heart.
