Nurses Set to Strike 15 Hospitals Wednesday and Thursday
California’s Biggest RN Strike This Decade
As Nurses Take a Stand for Safe Patient Care

Taking a stand for improving patient care standards, nearly 5,000 registered nurses are preparing to strike 15 Northern California hospitals Wednesday morning in California’s largest strike of registered nurses in a decade.
All but two of the hospitals are in the Bay Area and include some of the biggest hospitals in the Sutter Health chain, including Alta Bates Summit Medical Center with hospitals in Berkeley and Oakland, Mills-Peninsula Health Services in Burlingame and San Mateo, and California Pacific Medical Center and St. Luke’s Hospital in San Francisco.
RNs at two Fremont-Rideout Health Group hospitals, Fremont Medical Center in Yuba City and Rideout Memorial Hospital in Marysville, will also be on strike. No talks are scheduled at any of the 15 facilities involved in the walkout.
The strike is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, October 10 and run until 7 a.m. on Friday, October 12. At some of the hospitals, management has threatened to prolong the dispute with a lockout of nurses for up to an additional three days after the strike ends.
Other Sutter hospitals affected are Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, San Leandro Hospital, Sutter Delta in Antioch, Sutter Solano in Vallejo, Sutter Medical Center of Santa Rosa, Sutter Marin General Hospital in Greenbrae, and Sutter Novato.
Picketing begins at all 15 hospitals at 7 a.m.
Rallies will be held from 12 noon to 1 p.m. at the following sites:
Wednesday, October 10 * 12 noon - 1 p.m. Rallies
  • Alta Bates Summit, Berkeley campus - 2450 Ashby Ave., Berkeley

Re: Sutter Strike....

News coverage during the strike.
The hospital claims they tried but couldn't find enough nurses to meet the minimum required by law. But they somehow found nurses to staff the hospital during the strike.

Oh, they say they have a free charge nurse and break relief nurses and no double shifts. I think that is for the replacement nurses:
