Striking nurses, St. John's will meet Friday

St. John's Mercy Medical Center and the union representing its registered nurses will meet Friday for the first time since contract negotiations broke down more than three weeks ago.

The meeting was scheduled at the request of Roger Hendrix, the federal mediator facilitating the discussions. He said Monday that neither side had changed its position.

"It's just me calling a meeting because it's time to call a meeting," Hendrix said.

The meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. at an undisclosed location. Both sides said they are interested in resuming the talks, which broke down Dec. 12, three days before the strike began.

"We're prepared to go in there and bargain in good faith," said Chris Crain, the hospital's chief nurse. "Our goal is to get a fair and equitable contract and to bring this to resolution."

Hospital administrators said St. John's has continued to function as usual despite the strike. Representatives of the union said striking nurses are costing the hospital $2 million a week and affecting patient care.

I hope the nurses there stay strong, and not allow what they know to be better working conditions get canned to the wayside. Inhospital staffing in most USA hospitals is in dire need of serious improvement FOR THE PATIENT'S SAFETY! What part of that don't they understand?

Okay..........IF the agency and travel nurses are welcome with open arms during the strike, where do I sign up for that $75.00 per hour rate???? I can live with that hourly rate for three months...longer if needed.

If you can't post the information here, please send me a private message. I NEED to be working by Monday of next week!

I'm happy to answer that question for you!

AFTER learning from a few nurses who work at St. John's that they welcome the agency nurses, and do not feel negative about them being there during their strike, THAT is when I said I didn't mind coming there.

HOWEVER.......since that time, I've heard differently, and will NOT choose to work at St.John's during the strike! And, if things don't improve AFTER the strike, I won't consider working there at all.

Hope that answers your concerns.

Believe me you do not want to go to St. John's as a scab worker. Stand behind your fellow nurses and what we are doing for every nurse everywhere. But if you do go to St. John's to work then beware. They do not play fair. They break promises, put you anywhere they need you whether you have experience or not, and they will cancel your hours so that you will not be eligible for the bonuses or overtime. As any nurse from US Nursing Corp (SCAB Corporation of america) they will tell you the exact same thing.

Money is on there for a short time. Working conditions for nurses and patient safety issues will be there for your entire career.

MistyKat10...no need to worry...I am in support of those nurses at St. John's and all other nurses who are trying to improve unsafe patient care practices going on inside the hospitals where they work. I will NOT go to work at St. John's as a scab, or any other hospital as a scab.
