Striking Nurses to be Replaced?

August 12, 2004

There is a letter circulating at Mt. Clemens' General Hospital that threatens to replace the workers who left their jobs for the picket line.

On Monday, approximately 550 nurses went on strike, apparently fed up with overwhelming and unsafe patient loads at the hospital. They are hoping the hospital will lower the nurse to patient ratio.

Hospital executives, however, argue that the strike is actually a labor dispute, over wages, healthcare, and pension benefits. The hospital has said all along that if the strike drags on, they will have no qualms about replacing the workers that are striking. This weekend, the hospital is planning to run an ad in the newspaper looking for new nurses.
