Simulated training helps nursing students

With little clinical space available in hospitals, nursing faculty at Mesa Community College and other nursing programs turn to simulations to train students.

Guidelines from the State Board of Nursing allow students to receive up to 25 percent of their clinical training from simulations, said Anthony Louisiana, clinical simulation coordinator at MCC. The verdict is still out on how much simulation should replace interaction with actual patients, Louisiana and other educators say.

But advanced patient simulators like SimMan, which is used by MCC nursing students, offer realistic scenarios and even advantages over live patients, Louisiana said.

I hate sim man. you do all that practice on real peeps with all the other subtle stuff going on, that you rely on, but the plastic man has none of that.
They should only be used for basic procedures.

Re: Simulated training helps nursing students

I borrowed Sim Man from a local college for one of our ACLS courses. He was pretty cool but very expensive..$$$$$. I think they have some advantages in nursing school but should never replace the experience students receive from the real thing.
