With little clinical space available in hospitals, nursing faculty at Mesa Community College and other nursing programs turn to simulations to train students.
Guidelines from the State Board of Nursing allow students to receive up to 25 percent of their clinical training from simulations, said Anthony Louisiana, clinical simulation coordinator at MCC. The verdict is still out on how much simulation should replace interaction with actual patients, Louisiana and other educators say.
But advanced patient simulators like SimMan, which is used by MCC nursing students, offer realistic scenarios and even advantages over live patients, Louisiana said.
