Rural Pennsylvania Hospital struggles

Aliquippa hospital on life support
Saturday, November 24, 2007
By Jonathan D. Silver, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Like any terminal patient, Aliquippa Community Hospital is desperate for a miracle cure.

Faced with soaring debt, a dwindling number of customers and a state Health Department that will shut the facility Feb. 2 unless it fixes numerous problems, the 50-year-old hospital's time is running out.

Re: Rural Pennsylvania Hospital struggles

This is a long article but the part that makes me shudder is the part where they say they are about to default on their pensions.

Re: Rural Pennsylvania Hospital struggles

This may well be the end of a long & unfortunate road for Aliquippa Hospital. Mismanagement, an insular culture and increasingly stingy reimbursement from Medicare & Medicaid may well have written the final chapter.

Just a heads up though ... Aliquippa is hardly a rural hospital. It's 36 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh via Rt. 60/Parkway West, and serves a combination urban/suburban population from Aliquippa, and Hopewell & Center Townships and other areas.
