I'd be very wary of anyone who claims their previously non-verbal child suddenly began speaking in full sentences a few days after having no dairy.

Medicines can cause different reactions in different people, why not food? I think keeping an open mind is important when you try and solve any problem.

Actress Jenny McCarthy mentions dietary concerns in her book, Louder Than Words, about her autistic son.

Agreed.

I would also be careful not confuse the neurologic complications of celiac sprue with true autism.

I think we will eventually discover that "autism" is a catchall term that is more about describing symptomatology than etiology. Until the root causes are more easily and readily identified, autism will commonly be defined by the presenting picture. So you have kids who have sensory integration problems, and celiac kids, and kids with all kinds of other disorders who look and act the same. It's no wonder there is confusion--in the medical community as well as in the families.

That is a good point Miranda.

Celiac Sprue has caused a bone of contention in my family - my husband's parents are convinced that he had celiac as a baby because my mother-in-law didn't breastfeed and he didn't tolerate formula. They fed him bananas and Carnation milk. And he supposedly thrived on that and so had "celiac's disease".

He has had no symptoms since infant-hood. He eats whatever he wants. Which is a bad thing in the long run since he was diagnosed with metabolic syndrome a few years ago.

I wonder if once you are diagnosed with Celiac, you always have it. Or is time a cure?

I have a friend who works with scientists from MIT and they have done much research into autism. No links to vaccines. Genetics plays a role instead.
