When Jennifer Krawcheck climbed aboard a dirt bike for the first time two years ago, she had no idea the ride would change her life.
"We were out in the desert, and I probably braked too hard and went over the handlebars," said the 31-year-old single mom from north Phoenix. "I have no recollection of what really happened."
But once she hit the ground, the critical-care nurse had no doubts about the seriousness of her injuries.
"I knew right away my back was broken and I was paralyzed and I was at peace with that," she said.
But Krawcheck didn't let the tragedy keep her down because she knew she had to find a way to continue to make a living to support her son, Slade, 11.
She had always wanted to teach, so she just accelerated that goal. Last month, after 1½ years in night classes, she delivered her final dissertation and secured the added degree she needed to save her beloved nursing career.
